Before the start of today's games, would anyone have guessed that DeAngelo Williams would be the day's top performer? Or that the Colts wouldn't score an offensive TD against the Browns? As we move closer and closer to the end of the NFL season, we can see what team's are on their way to the playoffs and who will be left home. Here are the day's top players and not surprisingly, most of them come from playoff-bound teams.
Quarterbacks:
Eli Manning, NYG – 21 of 34, 305 yards, TD, INT. Another week, another win for the Giants. Is anyone surprised? What about this Eli Manning character? He is an offensive machine and today, has his first 300-yard game of the season.
Jay Cutler, DEN – 27 of 43, 357, 2 TDs, INT. Has there been a team more up and down this season than the Broncos? Last week they get crushed by Oakland and today they beat the team that handed Tennessee their first loss. Go figure. It's Cutler's sixth game this season over 300 yards.
Aaron Rodgers, GB – 29 of 45, 298 yards, 3 TDs, INT. Rodgers led the Pack back from a 21-10 deficit, but he throws an INT with 1:30 left in the game, which led to the winning TD for the Panthers.
Running backs:
DeAngelo Williams, CAR – 21 carries, 72 yards, 4 TDs. What a game for DeAngelo, who continues to assert himself as the starter in Carolina. The four touchdowns are the most for Williams in a single game.
Thomas Jones, NYJ – 16 carries, 138 yards, 2 TDs. I've gotta believe the Chicago Bears are kicking themselves right now. Two seasons ago, they parted ways with Jones and decided to stick with Cedric Benson, who is now on the Bengals. Jones only has 1,088 yards on the season.
Marshawn Lynch, BUF – 16 carries, 134 yards. Lynch goes over 100 yards for only the second time this season, but it comes in a loss, one in which the Bills lose their starting QB as well.
Receivers:
Mark Clayton, BAL – 5 catches, 164 yards, TD/1 of 1 for 32 yards, TD. Last time Clayton went over 100 yards? You guessed it, Week 10 of the 2007 season against the Bengals. It’s the first time since ’06 that he’s accounted for 2 TDs.
Greg Jennings, GB – 8 catches, 91 yards, TD. Jennings caught a 21-yard TD pass to give the Packers their first lead of the game 28-21 in the fourth quarter, but it isn’t enough as the Panthers come away with the victory.
Tony Gonzalez, KC – 8 catches, 110 yards. Gonzalez may not technically be a wide reciever, but you have to give props to anyone who goes over 100 yards recieving, even if it is against the Raiders.
Defense:
Baltimore – Allowed 155 total yards, INT, 4 sacks. All-around terrible game for the Bengals, but a great one for the Ravens. They hold Cincy to 98 net yards through the air and 57 on the ground. Not to mention, they keep pace with the Steelers for the AFC North lead.
Buffalo – Allowed 195 total yards, 3 sacks, fumble recovery. The Bills somehow lose a game in which their defense dominates. I guess you can’t really win when your offense doesn’t score a TD.
Indianapolis – Allowed 193 total yards, 3 sacks, INT, fumble recovery. Indy's defense picked up the slack for their poor offense today, with defensive end Robert Mathis scoring the only TD of the game.
Rookies:
Joe Flacco, QB, BAL – 19 of 29, 280 yards, 2 TDs. Flacco gets better every week and puts up another solid game. This time it’s against a division rival and in the midst of a playoff race. To put it in perspective, Flacco has had a passer rating of 80 or better in seven of 12 games this season.
Matt Ryan, QB, ATL – 17 of 23, 207 yards, 2 TDs. Ryan and the surprising Falcons continue to get it done, as they take down the Chargers today and stay only a game behind the Bucs and Panthers in the NFC South.
Peyton Hillis, RB, DEN – 22 carries, 129 yards, TD. Who is Peyton Hillis? The guy has only started in five games in his career and now has a game over 100 yards rushing and another over 100 yards receiving.
Bums:
Reggie Bush, RB, NO – 3 carries, 0 yards/5 catches, 32 yards. Bush played in his first game since a Week 7 matchup with Carolina, but barely contributed in the Saints loss to the Bucs.
Peyton Manning, QB, IND – 15 of 21, 125 yards, 2 INTs. The Colts won their fifth game in a row, but couldn’t even muster an offensive TD against the Browns. Are the Colts really back?
Clinton Portis, RB, WAS – 11 carries, 22 yards/1 catch, 15 yards. The Redskins had their asses handed to them by the Giants and Portis, the NFL’s top rusher, was barely visible in the loss.
