Ok … hear me out. I know this is gonna sound nuts, but if Tom Brady is out for the season like reports are indicating, the Patriots are going to have to do something about the QB position to salvage the season. I see only one option and I can’t believe New England hasn’t already made the deal.
Two words … Daunte Culpepper. If anyone knows the drill, it’s Culpepper. Throw it to Moss and let Randy do his job. Culpepper made his career doing that in Minnesota, and with a relatively healthy knee, Daunte and Moss could win that title that eluded them as Vikings.
Imagine the storylines. Culpepper comes back from knee injuries and retirement to lead the Pats. And how ironic. Brady came in as an unknown when Drew Bledsoe went down and ended up being the team’s savior. Now Brady goes down and a guy, who had a ridiculous knee injury of his own, comes in as the quarterback.
If you don’t think Randy Moss is trying to talk the Patriots into signing Culpepper right now, you’re crazy. The two ALMOST had a reunion in Green Bay and they just missed each other in stints with the Raiders. These guys want to rekindle what they had. Sounds crazy, but for two guys who want a ring, it might just be the solution.
What do the Pats have to lose? Are Matt Cassel or Kevin O'Connell really lighting the world on fire? There are reports that the Pats have called Chris Simms to see if he’s available for a workout and physical. Simms may be able to do well in New England, who knows?
Daunte already knows he isn’t getting any other chances and he’s DYING to prove himself to the teams that passed him up. Remember the taunting he gave Miami fans as a member of the Raiders? Multiple coaches find it hard to believe Culpepper is out of work and if anyone can get the best out of Culpepper, it’s Belichick.
Culpepper could also take it pretty easy in New England. The Patriots aren’t looking for a quarterback to run all over the place to make plays. They want someone who can stand in the pocket and deliver the ball. Culpepper’s knee may not be what it used to be, but I bet if you put him behind that solid offensive line and give him some time, he can launch it downfield to Moss or Wes Welker.
With Matt Cassel, New England barely beat the Chiefs. THE FRIGGIN CHIEFS! They know that Cassel isn’t going to cut it. I’m just saying that Culpepper and Moss connected for 53 TDs in their five seasons together.
