NFL Week 12 fantasy recap - N.Y. Giants at Denver
Here's a quick look at the Giants/Broncos matchup with a bit of a fantasy twist.
We also have from fantasy updates from Giants-Broncos from Daniel E. Dobish.
Game recap: This game had the makings of a good one, as both clubs started the season like a ball of fire, but have hit hard times of late. Broncos DB Brian Dawkins apparently held a players only meeting this week with this teammates and it did wonders, as the defense was back to form and the Giants were anything but giant in the Thanksgiving nightcap.
It used to be next to impossible to run on the G-Men, but rookie Knowshon Moreno and even veteran Correll Buckhalter found plenty of running room against a rushing defense which continues to tumble down the rankings.
Fantasy stud(s): Matt Prater, K, DEN -- Knowshon Moreno, RB, DEN: A kicker? Really? Yep, Prater was on fire, nailing all four of his field goal attempts (26, 32, 47, 24) while tacking on a pair of extra points. The rookie Moreno was by far the most impressive skill position player, rumbling for 88 yards and a score while racking up two receptions for 19 yards. Moreno has not scored a touchdown in a season-high four straight games dating back to Week 8 in Baltimore. However, he has ran for at least 80 yards in three consecutive games.
Fantasy dud(s): Eli Manning, QB, NYG -- Brandon Jacobs, RB, NYG -- Kevin Boss, TE, NYG: The Giants have had a difficult time lately, but Manning has managed to at least post decent stat lines to help fantasy owners. Thursday's game marked the first time in 11 starts that Manning failed to throw at least one TD pass. Jacobs was disappointing again, as he carried 11 times for 27 yards while also managing three receptions for 30 yards. He has now gone 15 straight games without a 100-yard effort dating back to Nov. 9, 2008 in Philadelphia. Boss entered with four scores during a three-game TD streak, but he didn't even come close with two grabs for only 22 yards.
Injuries: Eddie Royal, WR/KR, Denver -- DJ Ware, RB, NYG -- Darcy Johnson, TE, NYG -- Royal suffered a thigh injury in the second quarter and was unable to return. He finished with no receptions. Ware, who wants to go by DJ (no periods, rather than Danny) to honor his father, suffered a concussion and was replaced by Gartrell Johnson as the primary back to Brandon Jacobs. Ahmad Bradshaw was inactive due to lower leg injuries on both legs. Darcy Johnson was shaken up, suffering a shoulder injury on his only touch of the game. DBs Michael Johnson (groin) and Corey Webster (left knee) also left this game, with Webster returning later to finish up.
Let me introduce you to: Elvis Dumervil, OLB, DEN -- Dumervil was amped up for Thursday's game, posting three solo tackles, including a pair of sacks. He isn't a household name or even on the tip of many fans' tongues when speaking of defensive dominance, but he has recorded a league-leading 14 sacks through 11 games.
Stat of the day: The Broncos turned the tables on the Giants in the fourth quarter, outscoring them 10-0. In the past five games, Denver had been outscored a whopping 66-0. since outscoring San Diego 10-0 in the final stanza back in Week 6.
Rookie look: Knowshon Moreno, RB, DEN -- 19 carries, 88 yards, TD -- two receptions, 19 yards. Moreno is certainly no secret and he has been featured here before, but he really had a breakout performance. He'll look to carry this momentum over into Week 13 after nine full days to get right to face the Chiefs on the road.
Defense/Special teams: The Broncos D returned to the form they showed earlier, holding the Giants out of the end zone all night and allowing one mid-range field goal and a long-range shot from Lawrence Tynes from 52 yards out. The Giants have more questions than answers on defense, as they have dropped five out of the past six and their D is simply not getting it done as they had earlier in the season.
Look ahead: The Broncos ride into Kansas City in Week 13 with a little bit of confidence for the first time in about a month. The same cannot be said for the Giants, who will be hosting the Cowboys next Sunday just trying to stay in the postseason hunt. If the season ended today, the Giants wouldn't be part of the playoffs.
Things you didn’t know: The Broncos were home for a Thanksgiving Day game for the first time since 1963. They were allowing 168.7 yards per game on the ground during their four-game losing streak, but they tightened up and gave up just 57 yards to the struggling Giants. That was the second-lowest total amassed against the Broncos this season.
Final thought: It's hard to believe that the Giants were once 5-0 and playing New Orleans in a battle of unbeaten teams in Week 6. They resemble nothing looking like an elite team and they'll be hard-pressed to finish above .500 at this rate, let alone make the playoffs. The Broncos appear to have righted the ship, but against the G-Men lately, that's not saying much. If they go to Arrowhead and throttle the Chiefs in Week 13, we can officially declare them back to elite status.
