Quarterbacks
Favre tosses 4 TDs against former team
Vikings QB Brett Favre was 17 of 28 for 244 yards and four touchdowns in Sunday’s win at Lambeau Field over his former team, the Packers.
Analysis: Not only did Favre sweep the season series against the Pack, he also threw no interceptions in either game. In fact, Favre has thrown just three interceptions all season and has a 106 QB rating. There’s no question he’s emerged as a legitimate fantasy starter. He’s on a bye in Week 9, but you may want to start him in Week 10 against the lowly Lions.
Rodgers has big day in loss
Packers QB Aaron Rodgers had a big day in Sunday’s loss to the Vikings, going 26 of 41 for 287 yards and three touchdowns and rushed for 52 yards on five carries.
Analysis: Despite being pressured all game and saked six times, Rodgers still had a big game. An elite offense line would no question make him an even better fantasy QB – not that he isn’t already one now. Rodgers plays the lowly Bucs in Week 9, so no need to second guess his fantasy prowess just yet.
P. Manning blanked by the Niners
Indianapolis Colts QB Peyton Manning completed 31-of-48 passes for 347 yards, no TD passes and no INTs in Sunday's Week 8 win against San Francisco.
Analysis: The overall performance was a little disappointing for the fantasy stud, but at least he went over 300 yards. Manning and the Colts should find more offense against the Texans in Week 9.
E. Manning throws for 222 yards, TD
New York Giants QB Eli Manning completed 20-of-39 passes for 222 yards, one TD and two INT in Sunday's Week 8 loss at Philadelphia. Manning also carried three times for 34 yards in perhaps the most surprising stat of the game.
Analysis: The Giants and Manning laid a big fat egg in Philly, losing their third straight game. Manning is still considered a must-start fantasy option heading into Week 9 as the G-Men try to get well against the Chargers at home.
McNabb throws for three scores
Philadelphia Eagles QB Donovan McNabb completed 17-of-23 passes for 240 yards, three TDs and no INT in Sunday's Week 8 win against the Giants. McNabb also carried once for 14 yards, although he fumbled twice and lost one.
Analysis: McNabb has seven TD passes and no INT in four games since returning from a rib injury. He is a must-start in all fantasy leagues heading into Week 9 on Sunday Night Football against the Cowboys.
Cutler has no TDs in victory
Chicago Bears QB Jay Cutler completed 17-of-30 passes for 225 yards, no TDs and one INT in Sunday's Week 8 game against the Browns. He also carried five times for 32 yards.
Analysis: It wasn't a great day for Cutler's fantasy owners, as the Bears chose to rush the ball down the throats of the Browns instead. Cutler will try to rebound in Week 9 against the Cardinals and their very giving pass defense.
Warner turns it over six times
Arizona Cardinals QB Kurt Warner completed 27-of-46 passes for 242 yards, two TDs and he tied a career-high with five INTs in Sunday's Week 8 loss against the Panthers. Warner also lost a fumble in the forgettable game.
Analysis: Warner's five INTs tied a career-high set in a game against the Seahawks back in 2007. He'll look to get back on track in Chicago in Week 9 and he remains a must-start in all fantasy leagues.
Bulger does little in road win
St. Louis Rams QB Marc Bulger completed 17-of-35 passes for 176 yards, no TDs and one INT in Sunday's Week 8 win at Detroit.
Analysis: The Rams are off in Week 9 before returning to host the high-flying Saints in Week 10. Bulger should not be used in fantasy leagues for that matchup, so just drop him if you were using him as a bye-week replacement.
Delhomme injured in victory
Carolina Panthers QB Jake Delhomme completed 7-of-14 passes for 90 yards, one TD and no INT in Sunday's Week 8 victory on the road at Arizona. He exacted a little revenge after throwing five INTs in last season's playoff loss against Arizona in Charlotte.
Analysis: It wasn't all rosy for Delhomme, who was knocked out of the game in the fourth quarter due to what the team termed as a chest injury. It's uncertain whether or not he'll be ready for Week 9 in New Orleans, but he shouldn't be used in fantasy leagues for that game even if he can suit up. Matt Moore would likely get the start if Delhomme isn't ready.
Stafford finds end zone with feet
Detroit Lions rookie QB Matthew Stafford (knee) completed just 14-of-33 passes for 168 yards, no passing TDs and one INT in Sunday's Week 8 loss against the Rams. Stafford was able to find the end zone on a four-yard plunge and he also had a successful two-point conversion pass.
Analysis: Fantasy owners who rolled the dice on Stafford were a little disappointed, but they knew what they were getting into with some likely rust coupled with the fact star WR Calvin Johnson (knee) was sidelined. The Lions hit the road for Seattle in Week 9, but fantasy owners should not use him for that one despite the fact QB Tony Romo carved up the Seahawks on Sunday.
Alex Smith does little in Indy
San Francisco 49ers QB Alex Smith completed 19-of-32 passes for 198 yards, one TD and one INT in his first start of the season in Week 8 at Indianapolis.
Analysis: Fantasy owners who scooped him up after his three-TD relief appearance last week should know better. The 49ers are a run first and second team before settling on passes if they have to. A step backwards was certainly expected and it came into fruition for Smith. However, Smith might be a sleeper fantasy option against an awful Titans pass defense in Week 9.
Derek Anderson awful as usual
Cleveland Browns QB Derek Anderson managed to complete just 6-of-17 passes for 76 yards, no passing TDs and two INTs in Sunday's Week 8 loss at Chicago. One INT was taken back 21 yards for a score by DB Charles Tillman. He did account for the only score of the day for the Browns with a one-yard TD run.
Analysis: Anderson was lifted for Brady Quinn late, as the former starter completed 1-of-3 passes for nine yards. Might we see another change heading into Monday's Week 10 game against the Ravens after the bye? Cleveland fans and media will have two weeks to discuss during the bye.
Hasselbeck throws a pair of TDs
Matt Hasselbeck (bruised ribs) completed 22 of 39 passes for 249 yards and two touchdowns at Dallas Sunday.
Analysis: Hasselbeck took a big hit and stayed on the ground while trainers tended to him in the third quarter. But he was able to finish the game without issue. Seattle hosts the Lions in Week 9, which should offer them several good matchups – especially in the passing game.
Romo has another banner day
Tony Romo completed 21 of 36 passes for 256 yards and three TDs against Seattle Sunday. Romo won his 12th straight November start.
Analysis: Romo is finally back to where we thought he would be all season. He’s spreading the ball around, making sound decisions, and their rushing attack is taking some heat off of him. Dallas travels to Philadelphia for a tough divisional battle in Week 9. He has eight TDs in his past three games, so keep him active while he’s hot.
Schaub has rough outing in Buffalo
Matt Schaub completed 25 of 34 passes for 268 yards at Buffalo Sunday, but he didn’t score and he threw two interceptions. He also completed a pass for a successful two-point conversion.
Analysis: Schaub has had some great outings this season, so don’t get too discouraged. Houston is in for an even tougher matchup at Indianapolis in Week 9. You still have to start Schaub though.
Flacco has solid, unspectacular day
Joe Flacco completed 20 of 25 passes for 175 yards and a touchdown against Denver Sunday.
Analysis: Flacco was facing one of the best pass defenses in the league – and he put up a pretty nice game. Keep him active in Week 9 at Cincinnati.
Fitzpatrick can’t move ball vs. Houston
Ryan Fitzpatrick completed 15 or 23 passes for 117 yards and two interceptions at Buffalo Sunday.
Analysis: Fitzpatrick is not a worthwhile fantasy player. Buffalo is on a bye in Week 9 before traveling to Tennessee in Week 10.
Henne was subpar against Jets
Dolphins QB Chad Henne completed 12-of-21 passes for just 112 yards and one TD in Miami’s Week 8 loss against the Jets.
Analysis: Henne has had two back-to-back disappointing games and will need to step it up against a tough Patriots team in Week 9.
Sanchez plays well despite loss
Jets QB Mark Sanchez had 265 yards off 20-of-35 passes and two TDs, including one rushing TD against the Dolphins in their Week 8 loss.
Analysis: Sanchez played well with all of his receivers back and could be considered for a roster spot, but not a starter just yet. The Jets have a bye in Week 9 and will come back to host the Jaguars in Week 10.
Cutler without a TD in win over Browns
Bears QB Jay Cutler completed just 17-of30 passes for 225 yards, no TDs and one INT in Chicago’s stomping of the Browns in Week 8.
Analysis: Cutler was being pressured by a low ranked Browns defense and will need to step up his game against a tough Arizona defense in Week 9.
Anderson held to under 100 passing yards
Browns QB Derek Anderson completed just 6-of17 passes for a mere 76 yards a one-yard rushing TD and two INTs in his team’s trouncing by the Bears.
Analysis: Anderson has completed just 42.9% of his passes this year and will likely lose his starting job to backup Brady Quinn.
Garrard playing like a backup
Jacksonville QB David Garrard had his worst game of the season in Week 8 as he completed 14 passes for 139 yards and two INTs.
Analysis: It’s too bad you don’t get any fantasy points for effort, as Garrard hustled down field on one of Maurice Jones-Drew’s TD runs and get a block for his RB. Unfortunately you don’t and Garrard is just a fantasy backup QB.
Titans Young throws TD in return
Tennessee QB Vince Young started his first game of the season and led the Titans to their first win of the season in Week 8 against the Jaguars. He completed 15-of-18 of his passes for 125 yards and a TD as well as 30 rushing yards. The biggest stat of all was no turnovers.
Analysis: Young doesn’t have much fantasy value yet. He didn’t put up huge numbers, but goes up against a San Fran passing defense that isn’t great. In deep leagues Young will get picked up and could do nicely in Week 9.
McCown sees cleanup duty for Jags
Luke McCown was inserted into the game with two minutes left as head coach Jack Del Rio and the Jags threw in the towel. McCown threw two passes and one was almost picked off in the loss to the Titans.
Analysis: No fantasy value whatsoever, but if the Jags keep losing he might win over the starting QB job. It’s a big if, but hey you never know.
Running backs
DeAngelo Williams sets record in win
Carolina Panthers RB DeAngelo Williams carried 23 times for 158 yards in Sunday's Week 8 victory on the road at Arizona. With the huge day, he also passed DeShaun Foster for the all-time franchise lead in rushing yardage with 3,346 yards.
Analysis: Williams' performance was impressive considering it came at the hands of the Cardinals, who had allowed an NFL-best 67.5 yards per game. He remains a must-start in all fantasy leagues heading into Week 9 at New Orleans.
Forte runs for 90 yards, two TDs
Chicago Bears RB Matt Forte carried 26 times for 90 yards and two TDs in Sunday's Week 8 win against the Browns. Forte also racked up two catches for 31 yards.
Analysis: Forte finally produced a solid stat line for his patient fantasy owners who nabbed him in the first round only to see subpar results. Unfortunately for those owners, he'll face a tough test in Week 9 against Arizona and their strong rushing defense.
Steven Jackson finally finds end zone
St. Louis Rams RB Steven Jackson carried 22 times for 149 yards and his first rushing TD of the season in Sunday's Week 8 win at Detroit. Jackson also added three catches for 17 yards.
Analysis: Jackson finally had a breakout performance for his nervous fantasy owners, although he was really just doing what he should against an awful Lions rush defense. That score and a majority of his yardage actually didn't come until late in the game. The Rams are off in Week 9 before hosting the Saints in Week 10 in a fairly unfavorable matchup for SJ39.
Gore cracks off huge run in loss
San Francisco 49ers RB Frank Gore's ankle looked good in Sunday's Week 8 at Indianapolis, at least on one early carry. Gore ended up with 13 carries for 91 yards and a touchdown. He also added five receptions for 43 yards.
Analysis: Gore has re-emerged as a must-start No. 1 fantasy RB and he should have another solid week of production one way or the other against the lowly Titans in Week 9. If he is stuffed on the ground, he'll find plenty of room in the passing game.
J-Stew goes for 87 yards, two TDs
Carolina Panthers RB Jonathan Stewart carried 17 times for 87 yards and a pair of touchdowns in Sunday's Week 8 victory at Arizona.
Analysis: Stewart was limited in practice due to a heel injury, but he continues to play and produce well. He is a solid low-end No. 2 RB or must-start No. 3 or 'flex' option heading into Week 9 at New Orleans.
Brandon Jacobs runs for 86 yards
New York Giants RB Brandon Jacobs carried 20 times for 86 yards in Sunday's Week 8 loss at Philadelphia. He also had a pair of receptions for 21 yards.
Analysis: Jacobs has run for 67 or more yards in five of his past six starts, but he still has managed just one rushing TD over his past five games. Think of him as more of a No. 2 fantasy RB in Week 9 against San Diego, although their defense is awfully banged up in the middle.
Bradshaw punches another one in
New York Giants RB Ahmad Bradshaw carried nine times for 21 yards and a TD in Sunday's Week 8 blowout loss at Philadelphia. Bradshaw did not record any receptions.
Analysis: Bradshaw might be a solid low-end No. 2 or must-start No. 3 RB or 'flex' option heading into Week 9 against the Chargers, a team which is awfully banged up in the middle of their defensive line.
Rookie McCoy managed 66-yard TD
Philadelphia Eagles rookie RB LeSean McCoy had 11 carries for 82 yards in a start in place of Brian Westbrook (concussion) in Sunday's Week 8 win against the Giants. He also had a career-high 66-yard touchdown run late in the second half to ice the victory.
Analysis: McCoy is a solid fantasy play when Westy is sidelined, which is a little more frequently than his fantasy owners would care for. The Eagles host the Cowboys in Week 9 and McCoy is a solid No. 2 fantasy play if Westbrook is unable to go.
Beanie Wells runs for 47 yards
Arizona Cardinals rookie RB Chris "Beanie" Wells managed eight carries for 47 yards in Sunday's Week 8 loss against the Panthers. He did not record any receptions or scores.
Analysis: After an impressive performance at N.Y. Giants last Sunday, Wells took a step back in what appeared to be a favorable matchup against the NFL's 26th-ranked rushing defense coming in. Wells will look to rebound in Week 9 at Chicago, but he shouldn't be considered as anything more than a No. 3 fantasy RB or 'flex' option for that one.
Hightower totals 96 yards, score
Arizona Cardinals second-year RB Tim Hightower carried eight times for 39 yards and a TD in Sunday's Week 8 loss against the Panthers. He also added a game-high eight receptions for 57 yards.
Analysis: Hightower continues to be a solid low-end No. 2 or must-start No. 3 RB or 'flex' option in all fantasy leagues heading into Week 9 at Chicago, although he has a little more value in formats which reward points per reception (PPR).
FB Weaver surprises with TD
Philadelphia Eagles FB Leonard Weaver surprised in Sunday's Week 8 win against the Giants, posting eight carries for 75 yards and a 41-yard TD. Weaver did not record any catches.
Analysis: Despite Weaver's solid stat line, he is not someone to run out and grab off the waiver wire in fantasy leagues heading into Week 9 against the Cowboys.
Addai goes for 62 yards on ground
Indianapolis Colts RB Joseph Addai handled all but one of his team's carries in Week 8 against the 49ers with rookie Donald Brown (shoulder) sidelined. Addai had 20 rushes for 62 yards and two receptions for four yards. Addai did post a 22-yard halfback option TD pass to WR Reggie Wayne.
Analysis: Addai was a little disappointing from a fantasy perspective except for the surprising TD pass, but the 49ers are no slouch against the rush. If Brown is sidelined again, Addai should be a serviceable fantasy starter in Week 9 against a very giving Texans defense.
K. Smith, MoMo split carries
Detroit Lions second-year RB Kevin Smith carried 16 times for 45 yards in Sunday's Week 8 loss against the Rams and he had team-highs with four receptions and 49 yards. Backup Maurice Morris had 14 carries for 63 yards and he added one grab for 19 yards.
Analysis: Smith's owners don't want to see MoMo cutting into his touches so much, but he produced and it's likely to remain so at least in Week 9 in Seattle. The Seahawks have a fairly poor rush defense, so Smith is a recommended low-end No. 2 fantasy RB or 'flex' option. Morris facing his former team might be worth rolling the dice on him as a No. 3 option in deeper leagues.
Jamal Lewis decent in Chicago
Cleveland Browns RB Jamal Lewis was about the only bright spot in Sunday's Week 8 loss at Chicago, totaling 16 carries for 69 yards. He did not have any receptions.
Analysis: The Browns are off in Week 9 before hosting the Ravens for Monday Night Football in Week 10. It appears fantasy owners would be best reserving him for at least the next two weeks.
Garrett Wolfe goes for 53 yards
Chicago Bears backup RB Garrett Wolfe carried five times for 53 yards in Sunday's Week 8 win against the Browns. He cracked off a late 36-yard run to improve his overall stat line.
Analysis: Wolfe is still not worth a look in any fantasy leagues unless starter Matt Forte suffers some sort of long-term injury. The Bears host the Cardinals in Week 9.
RB Harrison runs for 19 yards
Cleveland Browns RB Jerome Harrison carried five times for 19 yards in Sunday's Week 8 loss at Chicago.
Analysis: Harrison's touches are down significantly since Jamal Lewis has returned to 100 percent health and his fantasy appeal has dried up as a result. The Browns are off in Week 9 before returning to face the Ravens in Monday's Week 10 game.
Rookie RB Coffee has one touch
San Francisco 49ers rookie RB Glen Coffee managed just one carry for eight yards in Sunday's Week 8 loss at Indianapolis and he did not have any receptions.
Analysis: Coffee was solid in place of Frank Gore for two games, but the starter is now back and healthy making the rookie out of Alabama waiver wire fodder once again. The 49ers host the Titans in Week 9.
Westbrook sidelined by concussion
Philadelphia Eagles RB Brian Westbrook (concussion) has been ruled OUT for Sunday's Week 8 NFC East battle against the Giants.
Analysis: Westy should be reserved immediately in all fantasy leagues. Rookie LeSean McCoy will make his second-career start in Westbrook's absence, although he is only worth a look as a low-end No. 3 RB or 'flex' option against a strong Giants D.
Rookie RB Brown OUT vs. 49ers
Indianapolis Colts rookie RB Donald Brown (shoulder) has been declared inactive for Sunday's Week 8 game against San Francisco.
Analysis: Joseph Addai will handle the lion's share of the carries on Sunday and he is worth a start as a No. 2 fantasy RB. Chad Simpson and Mike Hart might also see carries, but neither should be relied upon in fantasy football.
LaMont Jordan is a healthy inactive
Denver Broncos veteran RB LaMont Jordan is listed as a healthy inactive for Sunday's Week 8 game at Baltimore.
Analysis: As long as rookie Knowshon Moreno and Correll Buckhalter remain healthy, Jordan is not worthy of any fantasy consideration.
Nine carries for Fred Jackson
Just 12 touches for M. Lynch
Marshawn Lynch rushed the ball nine times for 43 yards and caught another three passes for six yards against Houston Sunday.
Analysis: Lynch is expected to get a bigger load while Trent Edwards is out, but Fred Jackson carried the ball nine times too (for 28 yards). Buffalo is on a bye in Week 9 before traveling to Tennessee in Week 10 – that’s a great chance to start Lynch again.
Another TD for Ray Rice
Ray Rice rushed 23 times for 84 yards and a touchdown against Denver Sunday. He also caught five passes for 24 yards. Rice’s 84 yards rushing are the most by one player against Denver this season.
Analysis: Rice is among the league leaders in yards after the catch and several other categories. He would likely be a top-five pick if your fantasy draft were held today. Keep him active again.
McGahee loses yardage on two carries
Willis McGahee rushed twice for minus-one yard against Denver Sunday.
Analysis: McGahee has been overtaken by sophomore sensation Ray Rice. Feel free to cut McGahee loose before Week 9 against Cincinnati.
Three TDs for Moats on a surprise afternoon
Butterfingers forces Slaton to take a seat
Steve Slaton fumbled his only carry of the afternoon at Buffalo Sunday – and he was benched in favor of Ryan Moats for the remainder of the game. Moats finished with 126 yards on 23 carries – and three TDs. Moats was the first player in franchise history to score three TDs in one game.
Analysis: Slaton has five fumbles on the season, so head coach Gary Kubiak finally just had enough. Houston is in for a tougher matchup at Indianapolis in Week 9, so don’t be surprised to see Moats carrying the ball in that game either.
Chris Brown goes for 22 yards
Chris Brown saw seven carries for 22 yards at Buffalo Sunday. Even with Steve Slaton benched, Brown was limited to just short-yardage carries for the most part.
Analysis: Brown’s not much of a fantasy starter outside of larger leagues that would reward a TD vulture like himself. Houston is in for a tougher matchup at Indianapolis in Week 9.
Barber scores on ground vs. Seattle
Marion Barber rushed 14 times for 53 yards and a touchdown against Seattle Sunday.
Analysis: Barber remains a solid No. 1 RB in fantasy leagues. Dallas travels to Philadelphia for a tough divisional battle in Week 9.
Nine touches for Felix Jones
Felix Jones rushed eight times for 39 yards and caught one pass for 30 yards against Seattle Sunday.
Analysis: Jones is healthy again, and despite today’s mediocre output, he’s a solid fantasy flex player or RB3 in Week 9 against the Eagles.
Moreno scores vs. Ravens
Knowshon Moreno rushed 10 times for 39 yards and a touchdown at Baltimore Sunday. He also caught two passes – for minus-four yards.
Analysis: Moreno faced a defense that looked like its old self. He’ll face another tough matchup against Pittsburgh in Week 9 – so look for an alternative fantasy RB with a better matchup.
Six grabs for Buckhalter
Correll Buckhalter rushed eight times for 16 yards, but he was able to catch six passes for 30 yards at Baltimore Sunday.
Analysis: Buckhalter is more helpful in PPR leagues. Consider him as a flex option in Week 9 against a Steelers team that might force them to go to the passing game.
Julius Jones rushes for 56 yards
Julius Jones rushed 15 times for 56 yards against his former team, the Cowboys, in Dallas Sunday. He also caught two passes for 32 yards.
Analysis: Jones is a better flex option, or RB3, in most weeks. Seattle hosts the Lions in Week 9, which should offer them several good matchups.
Brown was a bust in Week 8
Dolphins RB Ronnie Brown rushed 11 times for just 27 yards and had one reception for two yards in Miami’s Week 8 loss against the Jets.
Analysis: Miami’s No. 3 ranked rushing offense will face the Patriots No. 17 rush defense in Week 9, and Brown will have a chance to improve on his numbers, unless the Dolphins face a snow storm.
Williams led Dolphins in yards on Sunday
Miami RB Ricky Williams had two receptions for 41 yards and added eight rushes for 27 yards against the Jets in Week 8.
Analysis: Williams is up to 608 total yards on the season and is looking good as a flex option in New England in Week 9 against the Patriots 17th ranked rush defense.
Veteran Jones put up over 100 yards
Jets RB Thomas Jones rushed 27 times for 102 yards and added one reception for 28 yards against the Dolphins in Week 8.
Analysis: While Jones is sharing the work load with rookie Shonn Greene, he is a strong RB2 heading into Week 10 against the Jaguars.
Greene fumbles and it costs the Jets in Week 8
Rookie RB Shonn Greene had just 18 yards on eight carries against the Dolphins in Week 8. He fumbled in the second quarter which was recovered by Miami’s Jason Taylor and returned for a TD.
Analysis: Despite the fumble, Green should still see a few touches each week, but isn’t considered a fantasy starter.
Forte back on track for the Bears
Chicago RB Matt Forte rushed for 90 yards and had two TDs on 26 carries in Sunday’s win over the Browns. Forte also caught two passes for 31 yards. He was held to just 47 rushing yards in Week 7 against the Bengals.
Analysis: Forte has a tough matchup against the Arizona defense in Week 9, but remains a top fantasy starter.
MJD carries Jags, but falls short
Jacksonville RB Maurice Jones-Drew did all he could do in Week 8, but it wasn’t enough. He ran the ball eight times for 177 yards and two scores, but the Jags still let the Titans get their first win of the season.
Analysis: Jones-Drew is one of the lone bright spots on this Jacksonville team. Keep him in your starting fantasy lineup especially with the Kansas City Chiefs up next.
RB C. Johnson eclipses 200 yards on ground
Titans RB Chris Johnson rushed for 228 yards on 24 carries in Week 8 as his two TDs helped Tennessee beat AFC South rival Jacksonville.
Analysis: Johnson and the Titans face one of the best defenses against the run next week when they travel to San Francisco. Not worth benching him, but just so you know not to count on another 200 yards rushing in Week 9.
Titans RB White sees action, few yards
LenDale White had 47 yards on 13 carries in Week 8 against Jacksonville.
Analysis: White isn’t having as productive a year as he did in 2008 and has seen his fantasy value slide all season. Now that the Titans won a game maybe he’ll get on track, but next week won’t be a good time to see. If you own him keep him benched for a bit longer.
Peterson nears century mark
Vikings RB Adrian Peterson neared the century mark on the ground, rushing the ball 25 times for 97 yards and a touchdown in Sunday’s win over the Packers. He also caught one pass for 44 yards.
Analysis: Peterson is on a bye in Week 9, so that’ll be the only time this season you you’re going to sit him.
Grant has disappointing day
Packers RB Ryan Grant had 10 carried for 30 yards in Sunday’s loss to the Vikings. He added three receptions for 21 yards.\
Analysis: Green faced a tough Viking run defense, so his results weren’t completely unexpected. Look for him to bounce back in Week 9 against a terrible Tampa Bay defense.
Vikings RB Taylor see limited touches
Vikings backup RB Chester Taylor had five carries for 12 yards and caught two passes for 15 yards in Sunday’s win over the Pacckers.
Analysis: As you can see bu the seven total touches he had today, Taylor isn’t really used too often nowadays and is no longer a viable fantasy option as Adrian Peterson takes the bulk of the carries and QB Brett Favre has many options to throw to.
Packers FB Kuhn gets some looks
Packers FB John Kuhn had two carries for seven yards and two receptions for 22 yards in Sunday’s loss to the Vikings.
Analysis: As with most FBs, Kuhn doesn’t see enough looks to warrant a spot on your fantasy team.
Wide receivers
Rookie Harvin has big day
Vikings rookie WR Percy Harvin had a big day, catching five passes for 84 yards and a touchdown. He also had five kickoff returns for 175 yards, including a 77-yarder that setup a Vikings score in Sunday’s win over the Packers.
Analysis: Harvin is slowly but surely emerging as a legitimate fantasy threat – if he hasn’t already done so. The Vikings return from a bye to face the Lions in Week 10. There’s no question you start him then.
Jennings catches first TD since Week 1
Packers WR Greg Jennings set a season-high in receptions and caught his second touchdown of the season in Sunday’s loss to the Vikings. He finished the day with eight receptions for 88 yards.
Analysis: While Jennings has been inconsistent with the TD catches, he does face a terrible Bucs team in Week 9, so be sure to start him then.
Berrian catches third TD of season
Vikings WR Bernard Berrian caught his third touchdown pass of the season in Sunday’s win over the Packers. He finished the game with three receptions for 47 yards.
Analysis: Berrian has caught a TD pass in the last three even-numbered weeks, which is a good pattern to follow since the Vikes return in Week 10 against the Lions from their bye. OK, that pattern obviously means nothing, but you should still start him against the Lions.
Driver goes over 50 yards again
Packers WR Donald Driver caught six passes for 63 yards in Sunday’s loss to the Vikings. It’s the sixth consecutive game he’s had over 50 receiving yards.
Analysis: Driver is the Packers leading receiver this season and has been the most consistent, with three TD catches. He faces a poot Bucs defense in Week 9, so that’s definitely not the time to start sitting him.
Rice has lowest yardage total since Week 2
Vikings WR Sidney Rice caught four passes for 40 yards in Sunday’s win over the Packers. His 40 receiving yards is the lowest since the 29 had in Week 2.
Analysis: The 40 is tough, especially following two weeks in which he combined for 312 receiving yards (albeit with no touchdowns). Rice is currently the Vikings leading receiving, so there’s no need to sit him once the Vikings return from their bye in Week 10 against the Lions.
Wayne's groin doesn't limit him
Indianapolis Colts star WR Reggie Wayne (groin) was limited by a groin all week in practice, but he was fine in Sunday's Week 8 win against San Francisco. He managed 12 receptions for 147 yards and a score thanks to a 22-yard halfback option pass from RB Joseph Addai.
Analysis: Wayne did not show any ill-effects of his groin injury and remains a must-start in all fantasy leagues heading into Week 9 against Houston. He posted at least 90 yards in each of his two games vs. the Texans in 2008 (14 receptions, 187 yards, TD).
DeSean Jackson has another long TD
Philadelphia Eagles second-year WR DeSean Jackson managed three receptions for 78 yards in Week 8 against the Giants, including a 54-yard TD.
Analysis: Jackson has been the king of the long scoring play this year, going for 57 or more yards on all five of his offensive TDs. He remains a must-start in all leagues heading into Week 9 against the Cowboys.
Hester posts game-high 81 yards
Chicago Bears WR Devin Hester posted game-highs with seven receptions and 81 yards in Sunday's Week 8 game against the Browns, although he did not get into the end zone.
Analysis: Hester has 81 or more receiving yards in three straight games, emerging as a No. 2 fantasy WR heading into a favorable matchup against Arizona in Week 9. The Cardinals rank near the bottom of the NFL against the pass.
Panthers' WR Smith scores first TD
Carolina Panthers WR Steve Smith had three receptions for 56 yards and his first TD of the season in Sunday's Week 8 victory at Arizona. Smith also carried once for 17 yards.
Analysis: The TD was Smith's first since Dec. 14, 2008 in Week 15 against the Broncos, a span of eight regular season games. Despite his trouble scoring this season, Smith remains a must-start fantasy option in all leagues heading into Week 9 at New Orleans.
Crabtree leads way for 49ers
San Francisco 49ers rookie WR Michael Crabtree had team-highs of six receptions and 81 yards in Sunday's Week 8 loss at Indianapolis.
Analysis: Crabtree jelled nicely with WR Alex Smith in this one. He is a solid No. 3 fantasy WR option heading into Week 9 against a very giving Tennessee pass defense.
Rookie Maclin posts another TD
Philadelphia Eagles rookie WR Jeremy Maclin had four receptions for 47 yards and a TD in Sunday's Week 8 win against the Giants.
Analysis: Maclin now has three TDs over his past past four games, as he continues to do a great job in place of the injured Kevin Curtis (knee). He is a solid No. 3 or 4 fantasy WR or 'flex' option heading into Week 9 against the Cowboys.
Collie, Garcon solid in Week 8
Indianapolis Colts rookie WR Austin Collie and Pierre Garcon were each solid in Sunday's Week 8 win against the 49ers. Collie managed six grabs for 66 yards, while Garcon was good for four catches and 53 yards though neither found the end zone.
Analysis: Collie and Garcon combined for 10 receptions, but look for those numbers to go down once Anthony Gonzalez (knee) is ready to return. That might happen as soon as Week 9 against the Texans.
Giants WR Steve Smith has eight grabs
New York Giants WR Steve Smith had a game-high eight receptions for 68 yards in Sunday's Week 8 loss at Philadelphia.
Analysis: For the first time this season, the Giants' Smith was the 'bad' Steve Smith, as Carolina's Steve Smith found the end zone for the first time this season. The Giants' Smith remains a solid No. 3 or 4 fantasy receiver heading into Week 9 against the Chargers.
Fitzgerald totals 66 yards
Arizona Cardinals WR Larry Fitzgerald managed six receptions for 66 yards in Sunday's Week 8 loss against the Panthers.
Analysis: Fitzgerald was due for a mediocre effort against a Panthers pass defense which has been surprising solid this season. He remains a must-start in all fantasy leagues heading into Week 9 at Chicago.
Boldin aggravates ankle injury
Arizona Cardinals WR Anquan Boldin aggravated his ankle injury in Sunday's Week 8 loss against the Panthers. He was forced out in the third quarter after totaling just three grabs for 23 yards.
Analysis: Monitor Boldin's status in practice during the upcoming week. He has been extremely gimpy in the past two games and he is banged up again. The Cardinals travel to Chicago for a potentially cold weather game in Week 9 which doesn't help.
Breaston goes for 57 yards
Arizona Cardinals WR Steve Breaston (knee) racked up six receptions for 57 yards in Sunday's Week 8 loss against the Panthers.
Analysis: Breaston was used in the second half as the No. 2 WR with Anquan Boldin (ankle) aggravating his injury in the third quarter. He might be a solid fantasy option in Week 9 at Chicago if Q cannot go.
Nicks manages 53 yards in loss
New York Giants rookie WR Hakeem Nicks posted four receptions for 53 yards in Sunday's Week 8 loss at Philadelphia and he went without a TD for the first time in five games.
Analysis: Nicks will try to start a new scoring streak in Week 9 against the Chargers. Despite his recent four-game scoring streak., he is still more of a No. 3 or 4 fantasy WR in most formats.
Avant totals 32 yards on two grabs
Philadelphia Eagles WR Jason Avant had two receptions for 32 yards in Sunday's Week 8 win against the Giants.
Analysis: Avant has been lost in the Philadelphia offense following the emergence of DeSean Jackson and rookie Jeremy Maclin. Avoid him in all fantasy leagues heading into Week 9 against the Cowboys.
Jarrett starts, does little
Carolina Panthers WR Dwayne Jarrett made the start in place of the injured Muhsin Muhammad (knee) in Sunday's Week 8 win at Arizona and he posted two receptions for 22 yards.
Analysis: Jarrett did about as much as Muhammad has been doing this season, which isn't much. Avoid Jarrett in all fantasy leagues heading into Week 9 at New Orleans.
Hixon has one reception, FL
New York Giants WR Domenik Hixon managed just one reception for three yards and he had a fumble lost in Sunday's Week 8 loss at Philadelphia.
Analysis: Hixon did little in place of the injured Mario Manningham (shoulder). Avoid Hixon in all fantasy leagues heading into Week 9 against the Chargers, as he clearly has lost any fantasy value he displayed in 2008.
Bryant Johnson can't replace Megatron
Detroit Lions WR Bryant Johnson had two receptions for 43 yards in Sunday's Week 8 loss against the Rams, doing little despite the absence of WR Calvin Johnson (knee).
Analysis: The 'good' Johnson is likely back in Week 9 at Seattle, so avoid the 'sorry' Johnson in all fantasy leagues unless you are absolutely desperate in deeper leagues.
Isaac Bruce posts 51 yards
San Francisco 49ers veteran WR Isaac Bruce had four receptions for 51 yards in Sunday's Week 8 loss at Indianapolis. Bruce was targeted eight times, second only to rookie Michael Crabtree (nine).
Analysis: Bruce might be a solid fantasy sleeper in deeper leagues heading into Week 9 against the awful Tennessee Titans pass defense, but avoid him in leagues of 12 or fewer teams despite the favorable matchup.
Northcutt goes without a catch
Detroit Lions veteran WR Dennis Northcutt went without a catch in Sunday's Week 8 loss against the Rams despite the absence of Calvin Johnson (knee). TE Will Heller actually lined up and started at WR and had one grab for 10 yards, so coach Jim Schwartz must have known something.
Analysis: Avoid Northcutt, Heller and any other Lions receiver not named Calvin heading into Week 9 at Seattle. They're all useless in fantasy leagues except for Megatron.
Burton leads all Rams receivers
Second-year St. Louis Rams WR Keenan Burton led the team with five receptions and 54 yards in Sunday's Week 8 win at Detroit.
Analysis: Despite topping the stat sheet in the victory, avoid Burton in all but the deepest of fantasy leagues in Week 10 against the Saints once the team emerges from its bye.
Just one reception for Avery
St. Louis Rams WR Donnie Avery (shoulder) was able to play in Sunday's Week 8 win at Detroit, but he managed just one reception for 15 yards.
Analysis: Avery has done little from a fantasy perspective this season, disappointing since he has the chance to take major strides with the No. 1 job up for grabs. The Rams are off in Week 9 before hosting the Saints in Week 10, but leave Avery to the waiver wire unless you're absolutely desperate.
Knox, Bennett quiet in Week 8
Chicago Bears WRs Johnny Knox and Earl Bennett were mediocre in Sunday's Week 8 game against Cleveland. Knox managed three grabs for 44 yards, while Bennett was good for just 29 yards on two catches.
Analysis: Knox and Bennett might see better production against the weak pass defense of the Cardinals in Week 9. However, consider them only as No. 3 or 4 fantasy WRs or 'flex' options for that one.
Massaquoi has two catches, FL
Cleveland Browns rookie WR Mohamed Massaquoi reeled in two receptions for a team-high 28 yards, but he also lost a fumble in Sunday's Week 8 loss at Chicago.
Analysis: Massaquoi had that one huge 148-yard game in Week 4 against Cincinnati, but he has done little since the departure of Braylon Edwards. Use him only as a low-end No. 4 fantasy WR or 'flex' option in Week 10 against Baltimore when the team returns from a bye.
Cribbs, Stuckey just one catch
Cleveland Browns WRs Joshua Cribbs and Chansi Stuckey were each good for just one reception in Week 8 at Chicago. Cribbs tallied 23 yards, while Stuckey managed just 11.
Analysis: On a week-to-week basis, Cribbs and Stuckey aren't worth a look as a fantasy WR in any format right now. The Browns are off in Week 9 before returning home to face the Ravens.
Megatron OUT for Sunday's game
Detroit Lions WR Calvin Johnson (knee) has been declared inactive for Sunday's Week 8 game against the Rams. Bryant Johnson and Dennis Northcutt will start in his absence.
Analysis: It's a shame, as Johnson will miss a VERY favorable matchup against a giving St. Louis pass defense. Northcutt might be worth a look as a No. 4 fantasy WR or 'flex' option in leagues of 16 or more teams if you need an emergency replacement.
Berrian inactive for Week 8
FOXSports.com is reporting that Minnesota Vikings WR Bernard Berrian (hamstring) will miss Sunday's Week 8 game at Green Bay.
Analysis: With Berrian sidelined, rookie Percy Harvin will make the start opposite the red hot Sidney Rice. Reserve Berrian immediately in all fantasy leagues.
No surprise as Gonzalez is inactive
The Indianapolis Colts have officially declared WR Anthony Gonzalez (knee) inactive for Sunday's Week 8 game against the 49ers.
Analysis: Rookie Austin Collie and youngster Pierre Garcon get one more week to show what they can do. It appears Gonzo will be ready in Week 9, although that is not a certainty. However, it is the time to pick up Gonzalez to stash away on reserve if he remains available.
Brad Smith inactive vs. Dolphins
New York Jets WR Brad Smith (quadriceps) has been declared inactive for Sunday's Week 8 battle against the Dolphins.
Analysis: Smith will once again be replaced by David Clowney, although that will be as the No. 3 receiver with Jerricho Cotchery (hamstring) active. Avoid Clowney and Smith in all fantasy leagues.
Branch scores against Cowboys
Deion Branch caught three passes for 36 yards, but one catch went for a touchdown at Dallas Sunday.
Analysis: Branch has caught three or fewer passes in four of his five games this season. Seattle hosts the Lions in Week 9, which should offer them several good matchups.
Burleson leads team with six catches
Nate Burleson caught six balls for 89 yards at Dallas Sunday.
Analysis: Burleson hasn’t been a steady points provider in fantasy, but he has caught six or more balls in four games this season. Seattle hosts the Lions in Week 9, which should offer them several good matchups – especially in the passing game.
Just 24 receiving yards for Housh
T.J. Houshmandzadeh caught four balls for 24 yards – and he lost a fumble – at Dallas Sunday.
Analysis: Houshmandzadeh has just 58 yards receiving in his past two games. But help is on the way. Seattle hosts the Lions in Week 9, which should offer great passing matchups for Seattle.
WR Roy Williams scores second TD of ‘09
Roy Williams caught two passes for 19 yards against Seattle Sunday – but one of them was for a touchdown.
Analysis: Williams just isn’t the player he was in Detroit, and you can’t blame yourself if he scored this touchdown on your bench. Dallas travels to Philadelphia for a tough divisional battle in Week 9, which has a much better secondary than Seattle.
Crayton scores on punt return
Patrick Crayton caught three passes for 39 yards against Seattle Sunday. He did, however, score on an 82-yard punt return.
Analysis: Crayton lost his starting WR job to Miles Austin, but he has scored on returns both of the past two weeks. He helps out the Cowboys DST, but he’s not much of a fantasy wide receiver.
Austin goes for 61 yards, TD
Miles Austin caught five passes for 61 yards and a touchdown against Seattle Sunday. But Austin wasn't perfect; he fumbled at the end of an end-around run (he recovered it) and failed to get over the crossbar on a celebratory dunk after his touchdown. Teammates got a good laugh out of it.
Analysis: Austin now has five touchdowns and 482 receiving yards in his past three games. Keep him active in Week 9 against the Eagles.
Hurd scores on lone catch
Sam Hurd caught a 36-yard TD pass for his only reception of the afternoon Sunday against Seattle.
Analysis: Hurd often goes without a reception, which makes him too unreliable from a fantasy perspective.
Edde a Royal bust?
Eddie Royal caught just two passes for 10 yards at Baltimore Sunday.
Analysis: The Ravens’ pass defense was less than stellar before this week, so Royal should have done more damage. He has five games this season in which he has caught two or fewer balls. Bench him against Pittsburgh in Week 9.
Quiet day for Brandon Marshall
Brandon Marshall caught four balls for 24 yards at Baltimore Sunday. The Ravens pass defense showed glimpses of what they used to look like.
Analysis: Marshall is a stellar fantasy receiver and he should remain in your active lineup in Week 9 against Pittsburgh.
Mason scores against stingy Broncos defense
Derrick Mason caught four passes for 40 yards and a touchdown against a Broncos defense rated among the best against the pass Sunday.
Analysis: Mason is an underrated fantasy receiver. Get him active against the Bengals in Week 9.
Fifty-eight yards for Kelley Washington
Kelly Washington caught four passes for 58 yards against Denver Sunday.
Analysis: Washington rarely scores, but he does reach 50 yards or so receiving most games. He’s not worth starting in Week 9 at Cincinnati, however.
Three grabs for Mark Clayton
Mark Clayton caught three passes for 33 yards against the Broncos Sunday.
Analysis: Clayton doesn’t do enough on a consistent basis to warrant picking up in fantasy just yet, but if Derrick Mason goes down, he would be a solid waiver-wire acquisition. Baltimore travels to Cincinnati in Week 9.
Andre Johnson able to go for Houston
Andre Johnson (chest) was able to play at Buffalo Sunday. He led the team with six catches for 63 yards. He did catch a pass for a successful two-point conversion, however.
Analysis: Andre Johnson is a superstar must-start receiver in fantasy, but he’ll be tested in Week 9 at Indianapolis.
Four more catches Kevin Walter
Kevin Walter caught four passes for 29 yards at Buffalo Sunday.
Analysis: Walter’s fantasy value has hit a sharp decline since his return from injury. But with Owen Daniels banged up, Matt Schaub might need more from this receiver. Houston is in for a tougher matchup at Indianapolis in Week 9.
Fifty-one receiving yards David Anderson
Texans WR David Anderson caught three balls for 51 yards at Buffalo Sunday.
Analysis: Anderson has taken some of the chances that Kevin Walter used to get, but he’s still not someone to look at in most fantasy leagues. Houston is in for a tougher matchup at Indianapolis in Week 9.
Terrell Owens scores on a reverse
Terrell Owens caught five passes for 39 yards, but he also scored on a 29-yard reverse against the Texans Sunday.
Analysis: Buffalo is on a bye in Week 9 before traveling to Tennessee in Week 10. Owens should have a decent day against them.
Just two catches for Lee Evans
On a day many thought Lee Evans would bust out – he caught just two passes for 29 yards against Houston Sunday.
Analysis: Evans is still a decent WR4 in most fantasy leagues. You know he has the talent, but he’s hemmed in without a decent healthy QB. Buffalo is on a bye in Week 9 before traveling to Tennessee in Week 10.
Ginn’s back-to-back TDs make all the difference in Week 8
Dolphins WR Ted Ginn Jr. returned two kickoffs for TDs, one for 100 yards, the other for 101 yards, leading his team to a win over the Jets. He totaled 294 yards on six returns.
Analysis: After his stellar performance, Dolphins fans may have less hatred for the WR, but fantasy owners aren’t going to rush out and pick him up based off of one game. Keep an eye on Ginn.
Edwards fights for TD in loss to Miami
Jets WR Braylon Edwards caught four passes for 74 yards and literally fought forward against two Miami defenders on his back at the goal line for a TD in Week 8.
Analysis: Coming out of the Week 9 bye, Edwards should be a WR2 or WR3 facing the Jaguars in Week 10.
Cotchery is back for the Jets
WR Jerricho Cotchery caught three passes for 70 yards in his team’s Week 8 loss to the Dolphins. He was targeted eight times and had a 53-yard catch-and-run.
Analysis: Cotchery should be back to full health after the Jets’ Week 9 bye and be ready to start on your fantasy team again.
Hester couldn’t find end zone against Browns
Bears WR Devin Hester caught seven passes for 81 yards in the Bears’ win over the Browns. He was targeted eight times by Jay Cutler and nearly broke a punt return out for a TD but was stopped by the punter.
Analysis: Going up against a strong No. 1 ranked Arizona rush defense in Week 9, Hester will have to be at the top of his game. He looks like a considerable WR2/WR3.
Rookie Knox has potential
Bears rookie WR Johnny Knox caught three passes for 44 yards and had an impressive 31-yard catch in the third quarter which set up a Matt Forte TD.
Analysis: Knox looks like he has the ability to break out at any time in any game. Keep your eye on this rookie.
Jags WR Thomas paces team with 55 yards
Jacksonville WR Mike Thomas was targeted six times in Week 8 and caught four passes for 55 yards in the Jags 30-13 loss to the Titans.
Analysis: The rookie WR had the best game of his short NFL career, but unfortunately that doesn’t mean he is a fantasy stud. He is worth monitoring as Mike Sims-Walker was an undrafted fantasy player that became waiver wire gold.
Rookie Dillard makes a grab in Week 8
Jags rookie WR Jarett Dillard had one catch for 23 yards in Week 8 against the Titans.
Analysis: Dillard has no fantasy value this season, but Jacksonville is hoping he turns into a legitimate WR in the future.
Holt silent in Jags loss
Jacksonville’s veteran WR Torry Holt is still without a TD this season as he had just two catches for 15 yards in Week 8.
Analysis: Holt is a backup fantasy WR and if Jacksonville calls it a season he may become a backup WR on his own team.
Where, oh, where did Sims-Walker go?
WR Mike Sims-Walker had just two catches for nine yards in Jacksonville’s loss to Tennessee in Week 8.
Analysis: Sims-Walker has proven he is worth having on your fantasy team, but when he is targeted just three times you can’t expect too much from him. Next week the Jags might be able to get something going against Kansas City.
WR Gage leads team with 41 yards
Titans WR Justin Gage had his best day since Week 1 as he caught three passes for 41 yards, but failed to make it in the end zone during Week 8.
Analysis: Gage was thought to have some fantasy value this year, but with Tennessee being a running team first and one of the lowest scoring offenses in the league; Gage hasn’t had many opportunities to score.
Washington nabs TD from Young
Tennessee WR Nate Washington had two catches for 22 yards and a score as the Titans ended their losing streak by beating the Jaguars in Week 8.
Analysis: Not a huge day by any means, but Washington did score his fourth TD of the year. Like Gage, Washington was expected to help out this offense’s passing game, but has done very little to. He is a bye week fill-in in most fantasy leagues.
Britt catches one ball in win
Rookie WR Kenny Britt caught the one pass thrown his way in Week 8, but it was for just seven yards.
Analysis: With the 49ers on deck next for the Titans, the passing game could be a big factor. Britt has some value in deep leagues, but until he starts to get targeted more his value will stay low.
Tight ends
Shiancoe catches 6th TD of season
Vikings TE Visanthe Shiancoe caught one pass for 12 yards and a touchdown in Sunday’s win over the Packers. It is his team-leading sixth touchdown reception of the season.
Analysis: While he may not rack up the yards, Shiancoe is a legitimate TD reception threat every game, so he’s worth a look week in and week out – especially in Week 10 against the Lions.
Little-used Hayner catches 2 TD passes
Packers TE Spencer Havner caught two passes for 21 yards and touchdowns in Sunday’s loss to the Vikings. The one-time practice squad LB has caught three touchdown passes in his last two games. Half of his receptions this season have been for touchdowns.
Analysis: Hayner saw a lot of action thanks to starter Jermichael Finley. So if you have Finley and he is ruled out next week against the Bucs, then play Hayner at your own risk.
Dallas Clark one yard shy of 100
Indianapolis Colts star TE Dallas Clark managed eight receptions for 99 yards in Sunday's Week 8 game against the 49ers and he was held out of the end zone.
Analysis: Clark's performance is actually disappointing for some fantasy owners who get a bonus at 100 yards, especially since he was held out of the end zone. He remains a must-start in all formats heading into Week 9 against Houston.
Vernon Davis continues to score
San Francisco 49ers TE Vernon Davis had three receptions for just 20 yards in Sunday's Week 8 loss at Indianapolis, but he scored yet another TD.
Analysis: V.D. (an unfortunate set of initials) has jelled nicely with QB Alex Smith in the past six quarters, posting a total of four receiving TDs. Overall, Davis has seven TDs to lead all NFL TEs. He is a must-start heading into a favorable matchup against the Titans in Week 9.
Celek makes presence felt early
Philadelphia Eagles TE Brent Celek, coming off of an awful performance last Monday in Washington, posted four receptions for 61 yards and a TD in Sunday's Week 8 win against the Giants.
Analysis: Celek now has three TDs this season, but it is his first foray into the end zone since Week 3 against the Chiefs. He remains a solid low-end No. 1 fantasy option heading into Week 9 against the Cowboys.
Boss banged up in Week 8
New York Giants TE Kevin Boss had three receptions for a team-high 70 yards and a TD in Sunday's Week 8 loss at Philadelphia. He suffered an ankle injury in the second half, leaving briefly before returning after having the foot taped up.
Analysis: Boss might appear on the injury report next week and his practice schedule might be affected, especially if the ankle swells overnight. Keep an eye on updates next week before deciding on him as a fantasy option heading into Week 9 against the Chargers. Travis Beckum and Darcy Johnson are the TE options if Boss is sidelined.
Ben Patrick finds end zone in Week 8
Arizona Cardinals TE Ben Patrick had just two catches for 18 yards in Sunday's Week 8 loss against the Panthers, but he managed a TD.
Analysis: Despite the score, Patrick is not a recommended fantasy option for Week 9 at Chicago, nor is Anthony Becht or any other Arizona TE.
Olsen manages 40 yards in win
Chicago Bears TE Greg Olsen racked up three receptions for 40 yards and no TDs in Sunday's Week 8 loss against Cleveland.
Analysis: Olsen has been a bit of a fantasy disappointment, managing with just 175 yards through seven games. However, he has found the end zone three times. The Bears host the Cardinals in Week 9 and he is a decent low-end No. 1 fantasy option for that one.
Heiden has just one grab
Cleveland Browns TE Steve Heiden (knee) was active in Week 8 at Chicago, but he managed just one catch for 10 yards.
Analysis: None of the Cleveland TEs is worthy of any fantasy consideration in any format. The Browns host the Ravens in Week 10 after the team returns from a bye.
King, Barnidge each with a grab
Carolina Panthers TEs Jeff King and Gary Barnidge each had one reception in Sunday's Week 8 win at Arizona. King managed just five yards while Barnidge had a seven-yard grab.
Analysis: With Dante Rosario (knee) inactive, it was a disappointing performance for King and Barnidge. However, the Panthers were ultra-conservative in their initial approach and once they built a big league they kept their offense mostly ground-based to kill what little fantasy appeal King or Barnidge brought into the game. Avoid all Carolina TEs for fantasy purposes in Week 9 at New Orleans.
Fells scores on fake field goal
St. Louis Rams TE Daniel Fells scored on a 36-yard fake field goal on a pass from K Josh Brown in Sunday's Week 8 game at Detroit.
Analysis: Needless to say, despite the scoring play, Fells should be avoided in all fantasy leagues. All of his stats came on a fake or busted play and not as a regular part of the offense. The Rams are off in Week 9 before hosting the Saints in Week 10.
Pettigrew records two receptions
Detroit Lions rookie TE Brandon Pettigrew had two receptions for 17 yards in Sunday's Week 8 loss against the Rams. He was shaken up briefly, but able to return to the game.
Analysis: Pettigrew had a chance to step up in the offense with WR Calvin Johnson (knee) sidelined and he did not do so. Avoid him in all fantasy leagues in Week 9 at Seattle.
McMichael has a pair of grabs
St. Louis Rams TE Randy McMichael had two receptions for 16 yards in Sunday's Week 8 loss at Detroit.
Analysis: McMichael is the starter, but that isn't saying much. He has far more value to his real team than to fantasy owners, so avoid him in Week 10 against the Saints once the team returns from its bye.
Royal, Estandia inactive
The Cleveland Browns have declared TEs Robert Royal (hamstring) and Greg Estandia (knee) inactive for Sunday's Week 8 game at Chicago.
Analysis: The good news is that Steve Heiden (knee) is back. He'll join Michael Gaines against his former team. None of the four Cleveland TEs are worth using for fantasy purposes.
Three grabs for Derek Fine
Derek Fine caught three passes for 29 yards against Houston Sunday.
Analysis: Fine doesn’t do enough consistently from a fantasy perspective to be worth using. Buffalo is on a bye in Week 9 before traveling to Tennessee in Week 10.
Owen Daniels has knee sprain
Owen Daniels left Sunday’s game at Buffalo with a knee sprain and he was unable to return. Head coach Gary Kubiak said "It doesn't look good," and Daniels fears it could be season-ending.
Analysis: Daniels is backed up at tight end by Joel Dreesen, but see how serious the injury is before making any roster moves. Houston is in for a tougher matchup at Indianapolis in Week 9.
Just 16 yards for Heap
Todd Heap caught three passes for 16 yards against Denver Sunday.
Analysis: Heap’s best fantasy days are behind him, but if you need someone in a pinch, as a bye-week replacement, you could do much worse. Baltimore travels to Cincinnati in Week 9.
One ball for Scheffler
Tony Scheffler caught just one pass for nine yards at Baltimore Sunday. The Ravens pass defense showed glimpses of what they used to look like.
Analysis: Scheffler had a big game in Week 6 at San Diego, but he hasn’t done much in the other games. Reserve him in Week 9 against the Steelers.
Another quiet day for Witten
Jason Witten caught four balls for 36 yards against Seattle Sunday.
Analysis: Witten has now gone five games without a TD reception – and he has yet to go over 100 yards receiving in any game this year. Last season, he had six games with at least seven receptions. That has happened only once this season. Dallas travels to Philadelphia for a tough divisional battle in Week 9. He still has too much talent to reserve, but you definitely expect more.
Three catches for Carlson
John Carlson caught three passes for 36 yards at Dallas Sunday.
Analysis: Carlson hasn’t done much since his two-TD performance in Week 1. He has a nice matchup in Week 9 against the Lions in Seattle though, so maybe give him one more chance.
Keller was Sanchez’s go-to guy in Week 8
Jets TE Dustin Keller had eight catches for 76 yards and a TD against the Dolphins in Week 8. He made a few clutch grabs in traffic which included a diving touchdown at the goal line.
Analysis: This was a great game for Keller’s fantasy owners who can look to keep him off the bench when the Jets face the Jaguars in Week 10.
Olsen misses TD pass in win over Browns
Bears TE Greg Olsen caught three passes for 40 yards in Week 8 against the Browns. He was targeted four times by Jay Cutler and the pass he missed was in the end zone.
Analysis: Olsen has been getting a lot of attention from opposing teams and seems to be hit or miss. He doesn’t look like a good fantasy option against the top ranked Arizona defense in week 9.
TE Lewis targeted once, catches it
Fourth-year TE Marcedes Lewis caught one ball for 20 yards in the Jaguars loss to the Titans in Week 8.
Analysis: The Chiefs give up 252 yards passing a game and if Jacksonville can get things going their offense could thrive. Lewis, however, remains a waiver wire pickup in most fantasy leagues.
Wilford makes box score
On his second stint with the Jags, TE Ernest Wilford is giving the TE position a whirl. He had two catches for 18 yards in Week 8.
Analysis: Wilford sees enough playing time with the Jags, but that doesn’t equal good fantasy numbers. He’s on the waiver wire for a reason; just six catches on the year.
Rookie TE Cook targeted once by Young
The Titans rookie TE Jared Cook had one catch in Week 8 for three yards.
Analysis: Cook has fantasy value in a few years, and isn’t seeing as much time on the playing field as the Titans originally thought. He’ll remain on the waiver wire and could be a possible sleeper pick next year.
Crumpler 100 percent in Week 8
Tennessee TE Alge Crumpler caught two passes for 14 yards against the Jaguars in Week 8, but didn’t get a TD.
Analysis: Crumpler is more of a blocking TE now and has no TDs on the year. If this was the early 2000s model of Crumpler he’d be a fantasy option for you.
Scaife adds to reception total
Titans TE Bo Scaife caught all four balls thrown his way in Week 8 against Jacksonville. He had 27 yards receiving in the winning effort.
Analysis: Scaife has been a bit of a disappointment this year for fantasy owners as he has failed to score a TD and has been let go in a lot of leagues. He might be reborn in the passing attack with QB Vince Young under center, but jumping on the bandwagon too soon isn’t a good idea.
Kickers
Crosby misses crucial FG
Packers K Mason Crosby was 2 of 3 in his field goal tries on Sunday’s loss to the Vikings, missing a 51 yarder that would have cut Minnesota’s lead to just three. He also hit both of the extra point tries.
Analysis: There’s no shame in missing a 51-yard kick, but it would have been a huge one, not to mention three extra fantasy points. Even still, Crosby is a must-start fantasy kicker ever week as he averages at least three FG attempts per game.
Longwell nails 5 PATs
Vikings K Ryan Longwell hit five extra points to go along with a 41-yard field goal in Sunday’s against his former team, the Packers.
Analysis: Longwell has nailed all but one of his field goal tries this season despite averaging just two attempts a game. However, he does rack up the PATs (29 so far this season), so he makes a decent, low-end starting K.
Robbie is fantasy 'Gould' vs. Browns
Chicago Bears K Robbie Gould booted three field goals (37, 29, 32) and he added three extra points in Sunday's Week 8 win against the Browns to total a season-high tying 12 points.
Analysis: Gould and the Bears will find the sledding a little more difficult against the Cardinals in Week 9, although Gould remains a must-start fantasy option since he might be in line for more field goals.
Stover totals 12 points in Week 8
Indianapolis Colts veteran K Matt Stover was true on four field goals (38, 33, 31, 40) in Sunday's Week 8 victory against San Francisco in place of the injured Adam Vinatieri (knee).
Analysis: Stover will be the kicker in Indy for at least the next four or five games, so he remains a must-start in all fantasy leagues as a result. The Colts host the Texans in Week 9.
Akers manages 10-point game
Philadelphia Eagles K David Akers connected on two field goals (30, 35) and he added four extra points in Sunday's Week 8 win against the Giants.
Analysis: Akers hit his average, as he has 70 points through seven games. With that kind of production, he is a must-start in all fantasy leagues heading into Week 9 against the Cowboys.
Kasay surprises with 10 points
Carolina Panthers K John Kasay booted two field goals (35, 31) and he added four extra points in Sunday's Week 8 victory at Arizona.
Analysis: Kasay was a surprise fantasy performer for anyone who risked it and used him as a bye week replacement. Despite the solid production, he is still considered a low-end fantasy option heading into Week 9 in New Orleans.
Rackers posts just three points
Arizona Cardinals K Neil Rackers did not attempt a field goal attempt and he posted three extra points in Sunday's Week 8 setback against the Panthers.
Analysis: Rackers will look to get back on track in Sunday's Week 9 at Chicago. He remains a decent fantasy option due to the fact Arizona has a decent offense more often than not.
Five points for Lawrence Tynes
New York Giants K Lawrence Tynes made one of his two field goal attempts in Week 8 at Philadelphia and he added a pair of extra points.
Analysis: The Giants laid a big egg in Philadelphia and the fantasy production of Tynes suffered as a result. He remains a must-play option in all fantasy leagues heading into Week 9 against the Chargers.
Josh Brown has five points, TD pass
St. Louis Rams K Josh Brown had a 41-yard field goal, two extra points and a 36-yard touchdown pass on a fake field goal in Sunday's Week 8 at Detroit.
Analysis: Brown gave his fantasy owners unexpected production in the win, making up for a lack of offense in what looked to be a potential offensive shootout. The Rams are off in Week 9 before hosting the Saints in Week 10. Brown should be back to the waiver wire in all formats if you used him for the favorable matchup or as a bye-week replacement.
Just two points for Nedney
San Francisco 49ers K Joe Nedney attempted just two extra points in Sunday's Week 8 loss at Indianapolis and he did not attempt any field goals.
Analysis: The 49ers kicker is normally not a recommended fantasy option, but he might be a solid sleeper or at least bye week replacement in Week 9 against a very giving Tennessee Titans defense.
Hanson blanked in Week 8
Detroit Lions veteran K Jason Hanson was blanked in Sunday's Week 8 loss against the Rams, as the Lions totaled 10 points thanks to a safety, touchdown and two-point conversion.
Analysis: Hanson's performance was difficult for fantasy owners to swallow considering this looked to be a favorable matchup, but the Lions proved that they are still the Lions. They hit the road for Seattle in Week 9, but avoid Hanson in all fantasy formats.
Dawson active, Cundiff OUT in Week 8
Cleveland Browns K Phil Dawson (right calf injury) is active for Sunday's Week 8 game at Chicago, as the team has declared Billy Cundiff inactive. He did not attempt a field goal and had his only extra point attempt blocked.
Analysis: Dawson was active for the first time since Week 2, but he is by no means a fantasy savior as he still plays for the Cleveland Browns. The Browns are off in Week 9 before hosting the Ravens in Week 10 on Monday Night Football.
Olindo Mare makes a 43-yarder
Olindo Mare made both extra-point attempts and his only field goal try (a 43 yarder) at Dallas Sunday.
Analysis: Mare has just five made field goals in his past four games. Seattle hosts the Lions in Week 9, which should offer them several good matchups, but look elsewhere for a kicker.
Nick Folk makes one, misses one
Nick Folk kicked a 40-yard field goal, but he also missed one, against the Seahawks Sunday. He also made all five extra-point attempts.
Analysis: Dallas travels to Philadelphia for a tough divisional battle in Week 9, and Folk should be a solid fantasy starter once again.
Just an extra point for Prater
Matt Prater had only one kick all game Sunday at Baltimore – an extra point that he was successful on.
Analysis: Prater normally gets a handful of kicks per game, so chalk this game up to being an exception. Start him against the Steelers in Week 9.
Twelve points for Hauschka
Steve Hauschka was successful on all six kicks (three field goals and three extra points) against Denver Sunday.
Analysis: Hauschka has some fantasy potential – but this is his first game of the season with more than two field-goal attempts. Baltimore travels to Cincinnati in Week 9.
Rian Lindell makes both kicks
Lindell was successful on a 21-yard field goal and on his only extra-point attempt against Houston Sunday.
Analysis: Buffalo is on a bye in Week 9 before traveling to Tennessee in Week 10, but Lindell really isn’t worth picking up in fantasy.
Jags kicker sees little action
Jacksonville K Josh Scobee had an extra point blocked in Sunday’s Week 8 loss to Tennessee, but connected on his other attempt.
Analysis: No field goal attempts and a blocked extra point are not good.
Bironas boots three field goals in win
K Rob Bironas hit three field goals (long of 48 yards) and all three extra point attempts in Week 8 as the Titans beat the Jaguars.
Analysis: Bironas is one of the best fantasy kickers and despite being on a losing team he a fantasy starter in almost all fantasy leagues.
Defense/special teams
Bears DST scores as much as Browns
The Chicago Bears defense allowed just six points and 191 total net yards in Sunday's Week 8 win against the Browns. In addition, DB Charles Tillman had a 21-yard interception return for TD late in the second half.
Analysis: Fantasy owners have to be pleased with the Bears overall output, as they also added a sack, two interceptions and three fumble recoveries. The Bears host the Cardinals in Week 9.
Colts hold 49ers to two TDs
The Indianapolis Colts defense gave up just 14 points and 295 total net yards in Sunday's Week 8 win against San Francisco. The Colts totaled four sacks, an interception and fumble recovery. LB Clint Session had a team-high eigh solo tackles.
Analysis: The Colts have re-emerged as a Top 10 fantasy option, as they have gotten much healthier over the past couple of weeks. However, they're still a low-end No. 1 fantasy option in Week 9 against a solid Houston offense.
49ers defense holds their own
The San Francisco 49ers defense allowed just 18 points in Sunday's Week 8 loss at Indianapolis while giving up 410 total net yards. The Niners totaled three sacks while picking up no INTs or fumble recoveries. DB Dashon Goldson led the way with nine solo tackles, an assist and a pass defended.
Analysis: The 49ers DST was surprisingly decent in what looked to be an unfavorable matchup, holding QB Peyton Manning without a TD pass. They might be a decent fantasy option in Week 9 against the struggling Titans.
Eagles D stifles the Giants early
The Philadelphia Eagles defense allowed just 17 points and 356 total net yards in Sunday's Week 8 game against the Giants. The Eagles also recorded two sacks and a pair of interceptions. LB Will Witherspoon, who had an INT for TD last Monday at Washington, had five solo stops and an assist.
Analysis: The Eagles shut down the G-Men and will look to complete the divisional trifecta on Sunday Night Football in Week 9 against the Cowboys. The Eagles DST remains a must-start in all fantasy leagues.
Giants trampled for 40 points
The New York Giants defense allowed 40 points and 391 total net yards in Sunday's Week 8 loss at Philadelphia. The G-Men managed two sacks and a fumble recovery, but they did not pick off QB Donovan McNabb once.
Analysis: The Giants have dropped three games in a row and will have to try and flag down RB LaDainian Tomlinson, QB Philip Rivers and the strong Chargers offense in Week 9. They remain a must-start in all fantasy leagues, but they're looking a lot less attractive than three games ago.
Cardinals D shockingly allows 34 points
The Arizona Cardinals defense allowed 34 points and 355 net yards in Sunday's Week 8 loss against the Panthers. The Cards also entered the game with the league's top rushing D, allowing just 67.5 yards per game. However, Arizona was dinged for 270 rushing yards.
Analysis: The Cardinals D was disappointing in a game which looked to be facing a tremendous matchup. They'll look to get back on track in Week 9 at Arizona. The Cards DST remains a must-start in all fantasy leagues.
Panthers D creates ton of turnovers
The Carolina Panthers allowed 21 points and 320 total net yards in Sunday's Week 8 win at Arizona, but they also caused QB Kurt Warner to turn the ball over six times. The Panthers had two sacks, five interceptions and a fumble recovery, with LB Jon Beason leading the way with eight solo stops, three assists and a pass defended. DT Julius Peppers also had a 13-yard interception return for score.
Analysis: The Panthers DST has been No. 1 caliber for fantasy owners over the past few games, but they are still not a recommended option for Week 9 at New Orleans.
Browns D pounded again
The Cleveland Browns defense gave up 30 points and 389 total net yards in Sunday's Week 8 loss at Chicago. The Bears rolled up 170 yards on the ground, equaling the 170.6 yards per game the Browns normally allow.
Analysis: The Browns did manage four sacks and an interception, but they are certainly not a recommended fantasy option in Week 10 against the Ravens once the team emerges from its bye.
Rams D surprisingly stout
The St. Louis Rams defense allowed 10 points and just 289 total net yards in Sunday's Week 8 win at Detroit. The Rams also had two sacks and an interception. Rookie LB James Laurinaitis led the way with six solo tackles, an assist and one pass defended.
Analysis: The Rams are off in Week 9 and are certainly not a recommended fantasy option in Week 10 against the high-flying Saints offense.
Lions tricked on fake FG, post safety
The Detroit Lions defense allowed 17 points and 362 total net yards in Sunday's Week 8 loss against the Rams. K Josh Brown hit TE Daniel Fells on a 36-yard fake field goal for TD for one of their two touchdowns. The Lions were able to post a safety.
Analysis: The Lions DST did well for fantasy owners who used them as a bye week replacement or to take advantage of the favorable matchup despite the lack of sacks. Drop the Lions back onto the waiver wire for Week 9 at Seattle however.
Sheppard inactive for Jets
New York Jets CB Lito Sheppard (quadriceps) has once again been declared inactive for Sunday's Week 8 game against the Dolphins.
Analysis: The Jets defense is getting healthier, especially in the secondary, although Sheppard's absence hurts. Still, the Jets DST is a must-start against the Dolphins and their 'Wildcat' offense, as they should be well-prepared the second time around.
Bills DST gets rolled over
The Bills DST allowed 31 points and 439 total net yards against the Texans Sunday. They also forced a fumbled, tallied two interceptions and two sacks. DB Jarius Byrd has two interceptions in three straight games. Bills DE Aaron Schobel did not return after hurting his groin, while RT Jamon Meredith did not return after spraining his right knee. Both were hurt in the first half.
Analysis: This Bills DST is not worth using in fantasy play. Buffalo is on a bye in Week 9 before traveling to Tennessee in Week 10.
Seems like old times for Ravens DST
The Ravens DST allowed just seven points and 200 total yards against Denver Sunday. They also notched a fumble recovery and two sacks.
Analysis: The Ravens DST hasn’t been as great as it has been in recent seasons, but the pass defense really stepped up in this game. Baltimore travels to Cincinnati in Week 9, which poses another tough matchup. Keep this unit active.
Broncos DST forces one turnover
The Broncos DST allowed 30 points and 292 yards to the Ravens in Baltimore Sunday. They didn’t get an interception, but they did force a turnover and register a couple sacks.
Analysis: The Broncos DST has been a pleasant surprise so far this season, this game aside. They’ll have a tougher matchup in Week 9 against Pittsburgh though. See if you have a backup DST with a better matchup.
Cowboys DST scores on punt return
Patrick Crayton scored on an 82-yard punt return against Seattle Sunday. The Cowboys DST also allowed 17 points and 308 yards on the day.
Analysis: The Cowboys DST forced a pair of fumbles and sacked Matt Hasselbeck three times. They travel to Philadelphia in Week 9, which should offer them a much tougher matchup. Consider an alternative DST with a better matchup.
Ravens defense stymies Orton
Kyle Orton completed 23 of 37 passes for 152 yards at Baltimore Sunday. He did not throw for a TD or an INT.
Analysis: This is the first game in which Orton did not throw a TD pass. He still has just one interception though. The Broncos host the Steelers on Monday Night Football in Week 9, which offers a tough matchup again for Orton.
Seahawks DST gives up 38 points
The Seahawks DST allowed 38 points and 362 total yards against the Cowboys Sunday. They also notched one fumble recovery and two sacks.
Analysis: The Seahawks DST just isn’t worth using in most fantasy leagues. Seattle hosts the Lions in Week 9, which gives them a nice matchup, if you need a bye-week replacement.
Three good field goals for Kris Brown
Kris Brown made all the field goals (22, 26, 42) he attempted at Buffalo Sunday.
Analysis: Kris Brown isn’t a bad fantasy starter in Week 9 at Indianapolis. The Colts have a tough defense and the game’s on turf.
Texans DST allows just 107 passing yards
The Texans DST allowed 10 points and 204 total yards at Buffalo Sunday. They forced a couple interceptions and notched a couple sacks.
Analysis: Houston is in for a tougher matchup at Indianapolis in Week 9, against a red-hot passing attack led by Peyton Manning. Consider other alternatives.
Dolphins defense and special teams wins the game
Miami’s LB Jason Taylor recovered a fumble for a 48 yard TD in the third quarter right in between WR Ted Ginn’s two kickoff returns for TDs for 100 and 101 yards.
Analysis: Miami will face an 11th ranked Jaguars offense in Week 10, and don’t expect Ginn to have another back-to-back TD performace.
Bears CB gets INT for 21-yard return
Chicago CB Charles Tillman had a 21-yard interception return for a TD in the beginning of the fourth quarter in Sunday’s Week 8 win over the Browns.
Analysis: The Bears face Arizona in Week 9 and will need to utilize every opportunity their defense has to capitalize off of interceptions.
Titans D fluster Garrard, Jags
Tennessee sacked QB David Garrard four times, intercepted him twice, caused to fumbles and blocked an extra point in Week 8 as the Titans beat the Jaguars 30-13.
Analysis: The Titans did give up a lot of yards to Maurice Jones-Drew, but he was the only Jag that was effective in Week 8. The Titans have a better offensive team up next and could give up another big rushing day in Week 9 to Frank Gore. Starting the Titans DST is only good in deep leagues.
Jags show holes on D
Jacksonville started two backup CBs on Sunday and let RB Chris Johnson rush for over 200 yards in Week 8.
Analysis: The Jags get the Chiefs next week and should be able to contain their offense, but that doesn’t mean it is a good start for your fantasy team. Their secondary is like Swiss cheese, but if you need a filler next week it is a favorable matchup.
Vikings D lackluster in win
Despite getting to Packer QB Aaron Rodgers six times, the Vikings allowed 26 points (23 of which came in the second half), 351 total net yards and did not record a single turnover in Sunday’s.
Analysis: The Packers have a very good offense, so it’s no surprise the Vikings allowed a lot of yards. However, they do get a break this week on a bye and in Week 10 against the Lions.
Favre, Vikings torch Packers D
Desite forcing two turnovers, the Packers allowed the Vikings to rack up 355 total net yards and didn’t get to QB Brett Favre once. They also allowed 38 points and four Favre TD passes.
Analysis: The Packers defense is mediocre at best, but they are a good option in Week 9 against a Bucs team that can’t get it together on offense and have a rookie starting at QB.
