Here's a quick look at the Raiders/Cowboys matchup with a bit of a fantasy twist.
We also have fantasy updates from Raiders-Cowboys from Daniel E. Dobish.
Game recap: The Raiders and Cowboys didn't appear to be much of an interesting game on paper when the schedule came out earlier this season. However, following Oakland's upset of Cincinnati last week and Dallas' uninspiring 7-6 win against Washington, it appeared as if this one might be watchable. Yeah, not so much.
The Raiders now actually resemble an NFL offense under QB Bruce Gradkowski's stewardship (as opposed to JaMarcus Russell), but that still doesn't translate to much in the way of fantasy appeal. Avoid the temptation of the storybook return for Gradkowski to his hometown of Pittsburgh in Week 13.
Fantasy stud(s): Tony Romo, QB, DAL -- Miles Austin, WR, DAL: No foolin' it was actually the second installment of Gradkowski-Romo on Thanksgiving Day. Romo completed 18-of-29 passes for 309 yards, two TDs and no INTs in Thursday's victory with one of his scoring hook-ups going to Austin, who finished with game-highs of seven receptions, 145 yards and a TD. Had the Cowboys had just one RB running the ball, he might have been fantasy stud, too. As it stands, Felix Jones led the way on the ground (68 yards, TD), followed by Tashard Choice (67 yards) and Marion Barber (61 yards). Barber helped his fantasy owners with 108 total net yards from scrimmage. TE Jason Witten also deserves honorable mention with 107 yards, his first 100-yard game of the season.
Fantasy dud: Michael Bush, RB, OAK -- three carries, eight yards: Bush exploded for 119 rushing yards just two games ago against the Chiefs, but he has seen a total of just seven touches, thanks in large part to a lost fumble in Week 11 against the Bengals. He is stuck behind both Justin Fargas and Darren McFadden on the depth chart.
Injuries: Greg Ellis, DE, OAK -- Ellis missed the second half against his former team due to swelling in his left knee and lower leg. He also added that there was swelling in his calf and shin which prevented him from returning and the medical staff tried to drain his knee at halftime. Other than that, no prominent offensive players suffered major injury.
Let me introduce you to: Bruce Gradkowski, QB, OAK -- Making his second start for the Raiders in place of the anemic Russell, Gradkowski completed 18-of-35 passes for 200 yards, one TD and no INTs. He also had three runs for 30 yards while losing a fumble. Gradkowski has earned the respect of his receivers with his leadership in the huddle and hard-nosed play, so the former sixth-round pick ('06 Tampa Bay) out of Toledo is in Oakland to stay for at least the rest of the season.
Stat of the day: Romo improved to 4-0 on Thanksgiving as a starter and he is now 83-of-120 for 1,141 yards, 12 TDs and two INTs on the holiday, including a 2006 win over Gradkowski's Buccaneers in 2006.
Rookie look: Darrius Heyward-Bey, WR, OAK -- two receptions, 21 yards, TD. Heyward-Bey had a pair of receptions for 21 yards and his first NFL TD in the setback. It will be a day Heyward-Bey never forgets, although it's uncertain if he'll ever emerge as a top-notch fantasy receiver or not. He had just seven grabs for 103 yards in 10 starts entering Thursday's game.
Defense/Special teams: The Cowboys D allowed just seven points and 305 total net yards in the victory. The 'Boys also had three sacks and a fumble recovery. LB Anthony Spencer led the way with six solo tackles, two assists, two sacks and a pass defended. For the Raiders, they were dinged for 24 points and 494 total net yards while coming up with just two sacks. They also did not have any interceptions or fumble recoveries. DE Trevor Scott had both of the sacks and a team-leading five solo stops.
Look ahead: The Raiders have a difficult matchup on tap in Week 13 at Pittsburgh, Gradkowski's hometown. The Cowboys will return to NFC East play, heading to the Meadowlands for an all-important game against the G-Men.
Things you didn’t know: Witten has now gone nine straight games since his last and only score of the season in Week 2. The opponent then? The Giants, who just happen to be next on the schedule.
Final thought: The Raiders appear to have a solid core of receivers, but Gradkowski is still not the long-term answer. The Cowboys are still in the hunt and might very well win a game if they get into the postseason, but this is not a Super Bowl contender.
