Brett Favre vs. The Troops

I think I've made my opinion about Brett Favre fairly apparent in my tenure here at OPEN Sports. He's a waffling, self-aggrandizing glory-hog who can't go a day without having his ego stroked by a long line of hangers-on and self-interested punditry. And he promotes the kind of jeans they sell at Walmart. Crimes against humanity!

Now, it seems, Brett Favre has a new obnoxious feather in his cap. According to a story posted on the Internet (which means it has to be true), detainees and enemy combatants being held in American military bases in Iraq have been using Brett Favre to turn the tables on their Wisconsin-born captors.

That's right, when some of the troops, perhaps feeling a little homesick, decided to start decorating their camp in Packers green and gold. Far from providing an outlet for stress relief, detainees have picked on this fact, and have apparently taken note of how well Favre has done for the Vikings, and use that to rub it in the soldiers' faces.

According to one Lieutenant quoted in the story, "One of the big words they know now is shenanigan. They'll constantly talk about 'Favre shenanigans,' 'He's so good for the Vikings,' and 'The Packers have got to really feel bad about that one.' "

I hate to be the one to say this, but... the terrorists are right. I don't know if you notice, but Favre is so good for the Vikings. He currently boasts a QB rating of 107.5, higher than Drew Brees, Peyton Manning, and, yes, Aaron Rodgers. The last time he posted a QB rating anywhere near that high was back in 1995, when he finished the season with a stately 99.5. There's no way he's going to win an MVP or anything, and the Vikings aren't enough of a passing team to give him a realistic shot at the yardage title. But it's hard to deny that his 17 TDs and only 3 interceptions on the year doesn't represent a tremendous coup for the Vikings.

That's not to say that if Brett Favre were on the Packers, he'd be performing much better than Aaron Rodgers. In fact, Aaron Rodgers is having a pretty spectacular year from a statistics point of view. The difference though, is that Favre has been a big part of the push that has boosted the Vikings from a fringe team to the NFC North dominators they are this season. Would they be winning without him? Probably, but definitely not 8-1 kind of winning.

So there you go Brett Favre. Add "enemy of the troops" to your list of award-winning superlatives, you Wrangler-wearing redneck douche!

Brett Favre is a stellar athlete with a will and desire to play football like nobody else. It's obvious that he plays football for the pure joy of playing a sport he loves. Why someone like you would take it upon yourself to decide FOR him what he should or should not be doing is beyond me. He is clearly capable of holding the position he holds though, and even a neanderthal like you can't deny that.

You know, there are some who might opin that bloggers are self-aggrandizing glory-hogs who can't go a day without having their egos stroked.
