There are 3 topics of conversation that always come up this time of year, and always annoy me. The three topics being "there are too many bowl games," "there needs to be a playoff system," and "screw the Yankees." To keep on topic and not write a book I'll cover the first, there are too many bowl games.
What exactly is the damage being done that the anti-bowl proliferation group want to avoid? It's a win-win situation. For the university it is much-needed money in a time where university budgets are being cut dramatically due to the shrinking economy and shrinking tax revenue. For many lesser-lauded teams it is the creation of tradition that helps in recruiting and boost the fan base's morale into the upcoming season. For the players it is a reward for their hard work with lots of swag and a field-trip that many who grew up in impoverished conditons never have taken (yes, even a trip to Lafayette LA is a vacation).
Most importantly it is a treat for the fans in general. Those who don't like all the bowls games, what exactly do you want to watch on TV anyway? Do you have some TiVo'd episodes of Two and a Half Men you'd rather watch then some barn-burning action between Florida Atlantic and Central Michigan in the Motor City Bowl? Come on...to re-tread an old saying involving another subject, bad football is kinda like bad pizza...even bad pizza is still pretty good, right? PS -- This is my first-ever original blog entry, please be kind.
