Fantasy four downs: Week 12
Three games played on Thanksgiving Day, including a Super Bowl XXI rematch between the Broncos and Giants.
Green Bay at Detroit
- Jermichael Finley is coming off a career-high seven-catch week, and he caught five passes in his last game against the Lions.
- Only Chris Johnson, DeAngelo Williams and Steven Jackson have rushed for more yards since Week 7 than Ryan Grant.
- It looks like Daunte Culpepper will get the start against the Packers Thursday. Great news for the Packers DST, since Culpepper has thrown eight INTs (compared to five TDs) in his past eight starts.
- Kevin Smith hasn’t scored since Week 4, and he totaled just 61 yards on 15 carries, with no catches, in his last game against the Packers.
Oakland at Dallas
- Bringing back memories of Kenny Stabler and Roger Staubach, Tom Landry and John Madden? Tony Romo and Bruce Gradkowski just doesn’t instill that same feeling. But after throwing three TDs in back-to-back games in Weeks 7 and 8, he now has thrown just three total TDs in his past three games.
- Roy Williams should take a seat on your bench, once again, after following up a 105-yard, one-TD game with a catchless outing in Washington.
- Chaz Schilens has been thrown to four times in each of the past two games, but we still like him to become the team’s top receiver by season’s end.
- Don’t worry about deciding which Raiders RB to start this week, you should keep them all on your bench. They have just five rushing TDs as a team.
N.Y. Giants at Denver
- Eli Manning threw his first 300-yard game at home last week, but the Broncos pose a much tougher threat than the Falcons pass defense. Denver ranks third against the pass.
- Brandon Jacobs has yet to rush for 100 yards in a game this season, and he has just two touchdowns in his past seven games.
- After getting off to a great start to the season (nine TDs to one INT in his first six games), Kyle Orton has just two TDs and four INTs in his past four games since their bye week.
- While the Giants rush defense ranks in the top 12 in yards allowed (104.8), they have allowed 14 rushing TDs, which is more than 28 other NFL teams.
Seattle at St. Louis
- The last time these two teams played, in the season opener, the Rams were shut out and Matt Hasselbeck threw for three TDs and 279 yards.
- Julius Jones scored and rushed for 117 yards against St. Louis in Week 1, and he’s expected to play again. Justin Forsett should still get enough touches to be worth using as a flex.
- Steven Jackson has rushed for over 100 yards in each of the past four games, but now he’ll have to do it with Kyle Boller under center. He rushed for just 67 yards on 16 carries in the Week 1 contest.
- Rookie Brandon Gibson, out of Washington State, has 12 catches for 154 yards in his past two games, and the only players thrown to more than him (26) in that span is Randy Moss (27) Wes Welker (28).
Carolina at N.Y. Jets
- After one of the slowest starts of Steve Smith’s career (21 catches, 259 yards and zero TDs in five games), he has picked it up with 24 catches, 340 yards and four TDs in his past five.
- The Jets’ rush defense has taken a step back from the early weeks, so DeAngelo Williams and Jonathan Stewart shouldn’t be in that much trouble.
- Jerricho Cotchery has put together two of his best games of the season against the Jaguars and Patriots. But the Panthers pose a problem, with the fifth-best pass defense in the league.
- Thomas Jones has five 100-yard rushing games this season, including four of his past five games.
Tampa Bay at Atlanta
- The Bucs have the league’s worst rushing defense, so whichever running back starts for Atlanta (Michael Turner (ankle) or Jason Snelling) will be good fantasy starts.
- Last season, Matt Ryan threw four interceptions and no touchdowns in two games against Tampa Bay. But this is a whole new Bucs defense, so Ryan should be able to pick them clean.
- Antonio Bryant is finally healthy again, and he hopes to duplicate last year’s game in Atlanta, when he caught eight passes for 108 yards and a TD. It’s doubtful that will happen in this offense though.
- Cadillac Williams hasn’t eclipsed 60 yards rushing in his past four games, but the Falcons’ rush defense allows an average of 126.1 rushing yards per game.
Miami at Buffalo
- Ricky Williams’ 5.3 yards per rushing attempt ranks him sixth in the league, in front of Michael Turner (5.0) and Ray Rice (5.0). And the Bills have the second-worst rushing defense in the league.
- The Bills have a decent passing defense, so steer clear of all Dolphins’ aerial weapons.
- Terrell Owens is coming off his best game of the season, by far, with nine catches for 197 yards and a score. His third best game of the season came against Miami in Week 4 (three catches, 60 yards).
- It looks like Ryan Fitzpatrick is taking over under center for Buffalo, which is great news for Terrell Owens, and bad news for Lee Evans. Trent Edwards leaned toward Evans more in his starts.
Washington at Philadelphia
- Donovan McNabb has his work cut out for him against a defense that has allowed a league-low six passing touchdowns this season.
- TE Brent Celek is averaging over 12 fantasy points per game in home games, as opposed to just six fantasy points in five road games.
- Rock Cartwright gets the nod as the ‘Skins starting running back, now that Clinton Portis (concussion) and Ladell Betts (knee) are sidelined. He’s a small, fireplug-type running back, with good hands in the backfield. Start the veteran against Philly.
- Against the Eagles in Week 7, Fred Davis, taking over for Chris Cooley, caught eight passes for 78 yards and a touchdown.
Cleveland at Cincinnati
- Carson Palmer has thrown 22 touchdowns in nine career games against the Browns.
- Cedric Benson (hip) could be back on the field for the Bengals, which would obviously warrant benching Bernard Scott in fantasy. Benson rushed 18 times for 74 yards against Cleveland in Week 4, but last season, he rushed 38 times for a season-high 171 yards in Week 16 in Cleveland.
- Brady Quinn took advantage of Detroit’s horrible pass defense last week, and his first 300-yard passing game should work wonders for his confidence. Fantasy owners should not, however, be confident in starting him against Cincinnati.
- The Bengals have the second-best rushing defense in the NFL, allowing less than 85 yards per game on the ground. Were you thinking about starting Jamal Lewis anyway?
Indianapolis at Houston
- Matt Schaub threw for 311 yards, one TD and two INTs in his last game against Indy. And strangely, he is averaging better numbers away from Reliant Stadium than at home.
- Andre Johnson caught 10 passes for just the second time this season against Indy in Week 9 (103 yards, no TDs).
- Joseph Addai is coming off his best rushing game of the season (a meager 74 yards), but he has scored a rushing TD in six of his past seven games.
- With Anthony Gonzalez still not assured of a return from knee surgery, Pierre Garcon continues to be a viable WR3 or flex player. He had his first career 100-yard game last week in Baltimore.
Jacksonville at San Francisco
- The Niners DST is allowing over 250 passing yards per game, which makes David Garrard a nice sleeper pick at QB -- and Mike Sims-Walker an excellent start as a WR2.
- Marcedes Lewis has 128 receiving yards in the past two weeks, topped only by Tony Gonzalez (149) and Kellen Winslow Jr. (131).
- Joe Nedney has just five field goals in his past five games.
- Jacksonville's pass defense is pretty shabby, although it is improving. Vernon Davis and Michael Crabtree are still good starts.
Kansas City at San Diego
- The Chargers give up plenty to opposing tight ends, but Sean Ryan hasn’t had a catch since Week 6 at Washington. Look elsewhere for help.
- Matt Cassel couldn’t eclipse the 100-yard passing mark in Week 7 against the Chargers, although since then he has four TDs and one INT in three games. Chris Chambers and Jamaal Charles should be your only starters from K.C. this week.
- The Chargers DST has suddenly become viable recently, with more sacks (19) than any other team since Week 7 – when they sacked Cassel four times.
- Vincent Jackson has just five catches for 66 yards in his past two games, but he caught five passes for 146 yards and a TD in Week 7 at Kansas City.
Chicago at Minnesota
- Jay Cutler has thrown 11 interceptions, compared to just five touchdowns in his past five games. The Vikings still have an above-average passing defense, so start him at your own risk in this rivalry matchup.
- Last season, Matt Forte averaged 99 total yards, three catches and a touchdown in two games against the Vikings. This season, he’s on pace for to rush for about 850 yards, with a total of about five touchdowns.
- Brett Favre has averaged 239 yards and just under a couple TDs per game in 28 games against the Bears in his career. Only Drew Brees (22) has more passing TDs this season than Favre’s 21.
- Percy Harvin’s targets have gone down recently, but he’s still explosive enough to score on any given play. Keep him active as a flex or WR3 this week.
Arizona at Tennessee
- Kurt Warner is still dealing with a head injury, so Matt Leinart is at the ready in case the veteran can’t go. Warner has a league-high nine TDs in his past three games.
- Steve Breaston’s fantasy value would go up if Warner is able to play, but his inconsistency makes him a better flex player.
- Vince Young and his receivers should have an easier time through the air against this Cardinals pass defense (27th), as opposed to Chris Johnson against their rushing D (eighth).
- Kenny Britt finally scored a touchdown Monday night, starting in place of Justin Gage (back), but he still only has seven total catches in his past six games.
Pittsburgh at Baltimore
- Ray Rice has been one of the great success stories this season, but the Steelers have allowed just two rushing TDs all year.
- There really is no other passing threat on the Ravens than Derrick Mason. His 11 targets a game over the past three weeks rank him in the top 10.
- Ben Roethlisberger is coming off his best fantasy game of the season (398 yards, three TDs, two INTs), but the Steelers lost the game. They’d much rather have a ball-control gameplan, with Big Ben throwing just 30 times, as opposed to the 42 times he did Sunday.
- Santonio Holmes has 267 receiving yards in his past three games – but no TDs.
New England at New Orleans
- The battle between the two highest drafted quarterbacks in fantasy this season on Monday Night Football! How many fantasy games are going to be decided with this game, considering how many fantasy starters are on both teams? The Saints DST has been the difference in recent weeks though.
- Pierre Thomas has been the between-the-20s guy, while Mike Bell is getting the goal-line work. With Reggie Bush (knee) expected to be back in action this week, Bell’s touches will decrease considerably.
- Over the past three weeks, Randy Moss and Wes Welker are the top two targeted receivers in the NFL.
- Laurence Maroney has scored at least one touchdown in each of his past five games, dating back to Week 6. With six rushing TDs in that span, he’s tied for second only to Maurice Jones-Drew (eight).
