The Pittsburgh Tribune-Review is reporting that Steelers' receiver Santonio Holmes has added more than ten pounds of muscle to his frame during this offseason. Holmes feels the new bulk will help him become a more physical, better all-around receiver.

Analysis:Holmes looks dedicated and poised for a big season. Coming off his Super Bowl performance, it appears as if he could ride momentum into this season and be an excellent fantasy option. Keep an eye on him during drafts.

The Steelers would like to re-sign Ryan Clark, and are discussing a contract extension with his rep, according to ProFootballTalk.com.

Analysis:A new deal could be done by the onset of training camp. Clark is a hard-hitter and chipped in 88 tackles (52 solo) and one interception in 2008 with the Super Bowl champs.

Santonio Holmes stated that he would like the Steelers to target him more in their aerial attack, according to the Sporting News. He said, "I tell my coaches, 'If you can give me six catches in a game, or at least eight opportunities, I am going to give you 100 yards and a touchdown."

Analysis:Holmes had a good run in the playoffs last season, and memorably made an acrobatic touchdown grab to lead the Steelers to a win over the Cardinals in the Super Bowl. He caught a career-high 55 passes in the regular season, and may finally be headed for a breakout year in his fourth campaign in 2009.

According to ESPN.com, the Pittsburgh Steelers have signed left tackle Max Starks to a four-year deal worth $26.3 million with $10 million guaranteed. Starks was the team's designated franchise player, so this move will free up about $3 million in cap room.

Analysis:Starks had been the team's transition player two years ago and franchise player this year, so he is probably very happy that the team has finally committed to him long term. He is a very solid offensive lineman, and while he has little fantasy value by himself, he creates value for the running backs and quarterback for which he blocks.

According to ProFootballTalk.com, Fernando Bryant has decided to retire from the NFL. Bryant played five season with the Jaguars and four with the Lions, and finished up his career with the Patriots in the 2008 preseason before being cut and signing with the Steelers.

Analysis:Neither Bryant nor his agent, Drew Rosenhaus, gave a reason for his retirement, but it seems likely that he was informed by the Steelers that he was not in their future plans. Bryant started 16 games in a season three times in his career, including his rookie season, and was seen as a decent corner for much of his career. We wish him the best in his future endeavors.
